Dell GPS Navigation System Navteq Installation Tips

First time posting!(recently):o

I haven't used my Axim X50V for a while since it stopped working about 2 years ago. I had it repaired and it works great, but naturally I had to reinstall everything including the GPS program by Navteq.

I do not know if it is required or not, but first I upgraded to WM5 since I had the disk. Doing this added a GPS icon in Settings/System.

Installing GPS software to the Axim was frustrating at first. I was unable to find a specific solution either here, or via Google, however I chipped away at the issues by reading about other Navteq GPS posts, and finally successfully installed the software to my Axim. I thought I would post what I learned here so that it might help someone else.

My GPS hardware is the wired version. The GPS receiver is marked BR-313D, and it says Model BR 08487. It works fine except for the plug that goes in the bottom of the Axim. It can, and does, partially disconnect which then stops the GPS program for lack of input.

The Software is on 3 CDs for Navteq On Board. It's titled Dell GPS Navigation.

Here goes:

MUST DO TO INSTALL GPS ON AXIM X50V

First, do a hard reset on Axim. This will wipe everything out on the Axim and make sure there is enough room to install the GPS program on it in the main memory. It’s big.

Next, know that from the PC, you have only one shot to install the GPS program on the Axim, or you will have to delete the program from the PC and try again. The feature that installs the program on the Axim comes up once, and I can’t find out how to make it reappear. Also, if you remove the Axim from the cradle during the installation you will have to delete the GPS program from the PC and start over.

You can ONLY install the GPS program on the PC, in Safe Mode, as an administrator, in Windows XP Home SP2, using Disk 1 of the set. Apparently there is an unsigned certificate with the GPS program that prevents a successful install, even if you have designated Administrator privileges to your user account. I understand that Windows XP Professional doesn’t have this same exact issue regarding user Administrator accounts.

The Axim does not need to be connected at this time via ActiveSync, which won’t run in Safe Mode anyway. After installing on the PC from Disk 1, a message will come up that the program will be installed on the Axim the next time you attach it to the PC.

Restart the PC normally. After it’s all booted up, attach the Axim to it via the sync cable/cradle. Ignore setting up an ActiveSync Partnership right now. The GPS installer kicks in at about the same time, work with that first. Follow the on screen directions and make sure you install in Main Memory on the Axim and NOT the SD card. This is why you wiped everything out on the Axim with the hard reset. There simply isn’t enough room if you’ve been installing stuff of any kind to main memory.

The program should sucessfully install on the Axim and appear in "Programs."

Now load the maps you'd like to use and you should be good to go.

Thanks, I too have been looking for some detailed info on installing the Dell Navigation System to my x51v. I did find out that you can copy one of the .cab files from the Dell folder on the computer, to the Axim and install from there.
