Question Compressing A Media File

Hello,

Does anyone know a free program that will compress an AVI file (movie)? I previously used pocketdivxencoder, but I believe there is now a charge for this. I use #1DVDripper to convert a movie to about 1 gig in an AVI format, and then I would use pocketdivx to compress it. I would then end up with a 2 hour move at around 250 mb. It was great because I could fit about 3 movies on a 1 gig SD card. Any ideas? I would pay for a program if necessary as long as it works.

I use Super, its a great program and its free.

If you use the avi for pocket pc preset, you will get around a MB for each minute of video, so a 2 hour movie would be around 120MB.

Of course there is noticeable quality loss, especially in fast action movies. But, if you want the movies to take up less space its worth it. Also, you can change the video and audio kbps in Super. It would make the file bigger, but you can get more quality.

One thing about that,
As far as I know at the moment Super doesn't work with Vista yet.
I may be wrong.
Fairuse is also free although it does have an upgraded paid version.

Also, Super has an insanely confusing interface (for me) to use. I like Riversoft's Video Cleaner, if you don't mind paying the money.

Really, i think its quite simple.

Has it changed in the last year or so. Im still using the 2007 version, b/c i heard the new one was slower.

Also, it better support vista or ill be mad. I just ordered a laptop with vista, and was hoping i could use its core2duo proc, 4 gbs of ram, and dedicated card to process videos faster than my old p4 desktop.

Oh well, ill have to look for alternatives if it doesnt work.

Thanks for all the tips. I will try some/all of these programs to see what "fits the bill". Any other tips?

Try to use a smaller resolution such as 640x480. Also, I would avoid Pocket Windows Media Player for fast-paced videos, as it lags out on you. Instead, I recommend TCPMP.

I use plain old Windows movie maker to shrink down videos, I use the best quality setting for pocket pc resolution. Windows movie maker crashes sometimes, I have to run it through Amerisoft movie suite first. I have around 50 movies on my pocket pc :approve:

I downloaded Super and there is a fee for this. "Spunker88" states that it is free. Is there a free version?
