[TIP] Track your mileage FREE with Excel on your x51v

There are third party apps to do this, but I have gotten by quite handily with this FREE alternative for tracking business mileage. This tip could work just as well on other PDAs/Smartphones with WM5 and higher - but I do it on my Axim x51v.
  1. Using Microsoft Excel on your Desktop Computer, select New File from your menu options. Excel 2007 gives you a nice menu of various templates-- I selected Expense Reports and then Travel expense with mileage log.
  2. Open it and then customize any of the fields with your standard information. Then,
  3. Save the file to your PDA using Activesync or whatever you use to syncronize.
  4. Since I have SPB Pocket Plus, I create a new item right on my Today Screen which loads the expense report directly. This makes logging the data as quick as a few taps of the stylus!
  5. Depending upon your WinMobile version, you may need to save the Excel in an alternate format to open it on your PDA.

Nice tip, but I track my mileage (also for free) using the free utility GasUpLogger. I've been using it for a couple of years on my x51v. It has a nice gui and does everything I need.

Nice little tracker! Thanks for the link! The only problem with that one for me is that I need to keep track of destinations for business mileage - I also need to submit monthly reports for reimbursement. Doesn't look like that one has that capability. I used to use Pocket Trips -- but that ended up having more than I needed!
