I actually found a much better way than bying TV tuner card!

Buy a DVD player with harddisk recording. All of them records in MPEG2 which means you can just transfer the files directly and encode them for the Ax. I know its more expensive but you get so much more flexibility than using a TV tuner card. Atleast thats my experience (I also own a TV tuner card from Pinnacle)

Best Regards

HI bjonne,

do you record from tv? also, i think you'd have more flexibility with pc then on a dvd/hdd recorder. With PC you have virtually unlimited space with hdd's, and you have better control over your video, unlike the hdd recorders like tivo which have preset limits.

afterall whatever works best for you~!

Yes I record from TV, if you buy the right HDD Recorder it will have the ability to exchange the harddisk, maybe even a network interface. This way you just transfer it to the PC. Some HDD recorders have up to 4-5 different recording modes. Of course it all depends on what you wanna do with it. I just love to sit, conftable in my couch watching TV and just press a button to record knowing I will be able to play it back either on the TV or on the PC without having to change all the cables, problem getting the correct drivers for the TV Tuner, having the PC running and when its recording you cant play on it.
When I used my TV tuner card and I was watching TV and a program I liked came on, I would have to go into the computer room, start the TV Tuner, set the settings and press record, then back to the couch. Then if I wanted to see what I had recorded I would have to sit in front of the computer or start the movie/tvshow etc. and walk back to the livingroom. Alot of walking each time I would go for something to drink, wc, telephone etc.

This way I have ALL the features of a normal VHS recorder AND all the features of harddisk recording/digital recording :-)

No need to say I looove it, well maybe Im just tooo lazy :-)

Why buy a dvd player with hd recording when you can pop a 25$ dvd drive in your pc and use the hard drive you already own? Plus you can avoid all the region restrictions easily this way, for a LOT cheaper..

If you read my post you would find quite a few advanges. But let me just repeat them again :

1. No need to have pc+monitor+keyboard+mouse in the livingroom. This ofcause can be avoided by having the PC in another room, which leads to the other advanges, no need to have cables from one room to another, walking back and forth to play/stop/record/rewind etc.

2. On screen menues, ohh yes you can ofcourse have the PC plug in to the TV via a SVHS cable, but again cables/cables etc.

3. Price. The cheapes DVD player incl. harddisk is sold (in Denmark at least) for around 300US$ so you dont need to be rich to get one :-)

4. Region, almost all DVD players today are regionfree unless you buy highend DVD Players.

5. I can use my PC for playing high quality games and STILL record a movie/tv show etc. No problem ofcourse here if you have 2 or more PC's but if you do, then whats another 300US$ (talking about being rich ;-)

6. Price. I spend aprox. 100US$ on a good TV tuner/grabber card, 50US$ on a 50ft long SVHS cable, 20US$ on a 50ft long double phone cable for sound and about 100US$ for a 80Gb harddisk, 50US$ for a DVD drive thats around 320US$ !! ALL of this I get a DVD Harddisk recorder for around 300US$ plus the other 5 advantages :-)

As I wrote in the previous message I too have tried using the TV tuner card, but man alot of trouble there.
The only advantage I can see about the TV tuner card is that if you are checking mails/surfing etc. you will have the ability to watch TV in the corner of you screen at the same time...

Hey, I didn't say your solution is a bad one, but I am saying that If I were to buy what you got, I'd have to go with the high end models, and since I don't have enough money for that, i would stick w/pc-tuner config, for now actually.. It is still a good way if you don't want to fiddle around with bunch of stuff.

Well, I specifically mentioned dvds, you dont need ANY cabling, doesnt matter WHAT room, etc.... You drop in the dvd, rip it, encode, dump onto ppc. total cost, 25$ for the dvd drive.

Why you started talking tv tuner in relation to what I said I can't understand. And I doubt the dvd drive will care what room your pc is in. As for region, in the US at least, any high end dvd player (one with HD recording) won't be easily hackable to be all region. The cheapies are, yes, but they almost never have hd recording and when they do, as you say, can be $300.

You have me on the 'cant play games while the pc is doing this' but you still need to encode it at some point, you cant play huge mpeg2 files on your ppc, so you still tie up the pc for some time. Also I can't be the only one here with multiple pcs, I have a chore one and a 'fun' one. Choreboy gets the grunt work like encoding things... the fun one is for hidden and dangerous 2.
