Question Back-up Strategy

Hi -

I've read the recent 'Back-up - How?' strings, but got some remaining questions:

I've used back-up and restore to my PC, but the first time I needed it after my Axim crashed (while downloading a new driver) I got the message that the format was incompatible (probably due to my upgrade to Pocket PC 2003). So here's my question:

After a new 'regular' 3.7 activesync and program re-install it's fairly quick and easy to get my stuff back, but it's a nightmare to:
- re-do my 'Home' settings
- re-do my user profile
- re-activate my Microsoft reader, Avantgo and some other apps
- Etc.

If I start using back-up/Restore, with the PC as my backup devide, will it REALLY store all data and all settings. Anything special I need to do to make this work??

thanks!

Depends what software you're using to backup. AS will backup everything in main memory, but nothing in your storage cards or built in memory.

After looking at the info for Pocket Backup Plus I get the impression that this will do it. Anyone know for sure?

I use Pocket Backup and recommend it highly - especially if you travel often and are away from your desktop partner with all of your PIM data. I was just using it yesterday when I was playing with the Intersil drivers instead of the shipping WiFi drivers. The only thing that I have to change after a hard reset/restore is setting the center of the navigation button to be "Action" but that is it.

I did have one issue when my most recent backup failed on a restore, but I always back up weekly, and I keep at least the last three backups, so I didn't lose all that much.

Backups are a great idea, but they MUST be current like the previous post mentions for them to be useful, and it pays to have a few of the last ones around. Same rules apply to desktop computers, laptops, etc. Most people violate these rules and are caught short soner or later (Me included)

Pocket Backup Plus will backup any or all your files, whether in main memory or in a card. It will also restore any and all files. You can schedule backups to occur any time and it will perform flawlessly, even shutting down any open applications and doing a soft reset when the backup is finished. Great product. Much safer and more thorough than AS.

Does any of the software create something like a Ghost Duplicate of the AXIM in whole? Because I have a lot of stuff on my AXIM, I mean A LOT, especially on the on-board memory, so I assume that is making it a bit slower, I was thinking of doing a hard reset and set everything to factory defaults, and either re-install the software or keep using what I got on my CF..

Whenever I install something on my CF card, it creates a shortcut on the "programs" dir. I guess once I reset my Ax, those will be gone, I have to create those shortcuts from CF..

Anyhow, which of these Back-up utility would you sugest??

thanks~! :D

I highly recommend Pocket Backup Plus. I use it to backup my main memory as a compressed executable file to my built-in memory. I have it scheduled to do this every day at 4:00 AM. If/when I need to reload, I've only lost that day's info. If I'm going to be playing around with settings, and suspect I may break something, I'll do a backup before I start, too.

Once during the weekend, I transfer the backup file to my desktop for a weekly remote restore (as well as rotating the current battery with the second one.) I've never needed to use the backup from the PC, as the built-in one has always worked just fine. It never hurts to keep a second backup though.

Pocket Backup Plus is the way to go. It allows for full or selective restores and can backup and restore directly to and from your PC in whatever directory you specify.

I personally use the scheduler to backup my Ax during the night while it sits on the cradle so I always have a complete backup before starting my day. I then periodically go in an clean out my backup directory on the PC. Can't go wrong with this....

Pocket Backup Plus is the best out there now and these are the people that originated GHOST and sold it to symantec.
