Must Outlook be running to sync?

I have searched the forum and while I have found many "Outlook and Activesync" threads, I haven't found one specific to my problem. If you can point me to one, that would be great, but here's my situation.

Since I got my Axim Friday, the only way I can get my Ax to sync with Outlook is to have Outlook running (running version 2002). When I try to sync with out it running I get this error message:
"Activesync cannot log on to Microsoft Outlook. Make sure Outlook is installed and functioning correctly. You may need to restart your computer. You could have a conflict due to two folders on this computer are named C:\Program Files\Microsoft and C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office." It then goes on to tell how to correct this problem. Then I get another error saying Synchronization cannot be started because you are not able to log on to the network and access information." Then it says to restart or contact my network admin.

I don't have a folder called C:\Program Files\Microsoft, I have reset my computer numerous times and I am not on a network. Do you guys have any ideas how I can circumvent this issue?

Outlook does not have to be running to sync, but apparently you have some configuration that is making it think you have multiple outlooks installed. I would suggest you look for where Office is installed on your computer to see if the directions would work in that directory. Also, check to see if Outlook is configured to use a server for mail, in which case you would need to re-configure it not to look for that server.

Hope that helped.

I don't have multiple Outlooks installed... at least there's only one directory for Outlook and one outlook.exe. I am not sure what you are asking about on the server issue. Of course Outlook has to check a server for e-mail. I am checking two different POP3 servers for work and home email.

I had this problem with Outlook 2000. If I attempted to sync before Outlook was opened, ActiveSync would hang and eventually I'd get a "GPF" style error on the Outlook process that ActiveSync was trying to start in the background. I never found a way around this and just made sure that I always opened Outlook first.

When the error would occur, I'd use Task Manager to kill any Outlook processes along with the ActiveSync process. Once they were all dead, I'd open Outlook, then ActiveSync, and the sync would work.

I've recently upgraded to Office Pro 2003, and no longer have any problems regardless if Outlook 2003 is open or not.
