how can i make *.avi files REALLY small to fit on SD card?

I have a 512mb SD card, but I'm interested in knowing how i can resize or compress the living heck out of a divx avi file when i am encoding it with virtualdub - in other words, to get as much stuff in as little space as possible. What settings can i play with to achieve this? I've seen the divx 5 codec configuration screen where you can choose between portable, handheld, etc... and I understand resizing, but is there any other way to compress stuff? I want to be able to fit an entire 2-hour movie on to one 512mb SD card - will entertain the passengers in the car for sure.

There is no problem that can't be solved with a suitable amount of explosives!
