Question Is there any way to edit my ROM?

:waaa: Can I replace a file in the ROM?

The reason why I am asking is because I found a way to
get Danish dictionnaire on my Axim, but I need to
find a way to replace the damn file.

After searching the web for hours I found this:
http://xda-developers.com/ROMkitchen/

Don't know if it works, am trying right now. :crooked:
Do any of you know a nice program?

ROM is divided into two parts. One contains the Operating System - either PPC 2002 or WM 2003. These cannot be edited, not can files be replaced.

The second part of ROM is Built-in-Storage. Here you can store whatever you like and files can be removed by using a File Explorer.

I strongly recommend Resco Explorer 2003. There will be a trial copy on you Axim CD.

Or, use ActiveSync when you are connected to your computer. I drag and dropped a bunch of data files into my built-in storage (from my SD card) for faster access and to free up storage space on the card.

Works great!

davrol is right that you cannot 'phsically' replace a file in ROM but I'm pretty sure if you simply copy the new file into the same folder as the original, the PPC software will use the new copy. Such a modification will not survive a hard reset but would be included in a backup/restore.

I am a little puzzled by your reply. A hard reset wipes RAM but does not affect ROM surely ?

Exactly. What I'm saying is that you can copy a file with the same name as one in ROM into the same folder on the PPC and the OS will use it but, the file is actually stored in RAM and thus will be lost with a hard reset.

As an example, the MS Reader comes installed as part of ROM but you can download and install the new version from M$ and use it, but the original version is still in ROM. The registry just points to the new version until a hard reset at which time the old version would take over again.

I know that a image saving tool was on the Dell Windows Mobile
2003 update Cd-rom. Maybe editing a backup of the ROM
somehow on the desktop pc.

Of course a tool for extracting the files and creating the ROM
again would be essential.

I have already tried replacing the file, by copying it to the
windows folder but it does not seem to work. I have also
made changes in the Registry Database, nor does that help.
To be more specific: changed the address to the dictionnaire file.
I think it wants the file to be in the ROM.

ROM = Problemo
