I have a 256mb sd card. There was only about 150mb of data on the card, yet the card showed only a few mb free space. I backed up the data, and deleted all info on the card.
However it still shows 80mb of used space on the card, but no files are evident.
I suspose formating the sd card is the answer to reclaiming the missing 80mb, but can't figure out how to format the card. Any suggestions how to format the card?
The easiest is to use a card reader with your PC but there is also 3rd party software that will allow you to do it directly on the PPC. Storage Tools is the one I've used - available from Handango
BTW, problems with sd cards (especially those from Sandisk) can be recurring. Check the Resources, Links, SD Trouble Guide for details.

I'm having similar problems with a 512mb Kingston SD card I got off of eBay. My card reader hooked up to my PC takes a long time to recognize it. Once it does I try to format it, but it says it can't complete(formatting). When I put it into my X3i, it said it couldn't format it as well. So I had a friend use his Tungsten T3 and it formatted it with no problem. Now I'm able to use it... only on my X3i. My computer still has the same problem.
I'm beginning to think... is it my card reader? Will it not handle a card of that size(512mb)???
I am able to use it in my X3i as a hard drive. But I really wanted to use it for file storage of files(like MP3's) so I can play it on my X3i.
Maybe it's a faulty SD card?? I contacted Kingston and they told me to get an RMA number and return it. But I'm having second thoughts. I like the idea of having this much space as a hard drive on my X3i.
Has anyone else had similar problems?? With SD cards this size?? Or Kingston cards??
btw.. I'm using Windows XP, and a usb card reader(not sure of the manufacturer).

I can still use it in my X3i, but for whatever reason my computer won't read off it. If it was completely useless, then I would definitely return it. But since I can make use of it, then it's ok for now. I'm just starting to wonder if XP has a problem with SD cards of that size, or if Kingston cards were known for having trouble with their memory cards.
have you tried any of the utilities as storage tools or pocket mechanic mentioned on this thread? you might be able to get more information through the process as to how to diagnose the problem you're having with the sd card.
i don't think xp would have problem recognizing flash memory of that capacity. a friend uses a 512MB SD card in his digital camera and then accesses pictures in them through a memory reader/writer on his computer running xp.

Yeah, I just installed Pocket Mechanic and I am scanning the card as I am writing this. Hopefully this will give me some insight as to what the problem is with this card. I've installed alot of apps on it already, and I hope I won't have to format it, to get it to work with XP.
If your card works in the PPC then copy your files from your card to your desktop via activesync so that you can atleast have a data backup of the card. Then you can format your card and restore your data back to the card.
