undocumented features (hidden key combinations)

I thought it would be nice with a list of "undocumented features" both hw-model and sw specific.

I've bumped into a few during my searches here but maybe there are more kewl tricks out there!?

Adjust brigthness
Press scroll button in and adjust with up/down navigator button

Activate RUN command
Press and hold ACTION button. Tap and hold time, then release action button.

Activate internal use spy
The PocketPC shell has a built in tool called the 'Internal Use Spy'. Basically it gives you information about the foreground window when invoked. To activate it, simply bring up the window you want information on, hold down the action button, and tap and hold in a blank area of the navigation bar until you hear a messagebeep. Then, without lifting the stylus from the screen, release the action button and drag the stylus over the window you're interested in and mouseup. A dialog like the above will then appear, giving quite a bit of useful info.

ROM update from CF card (X5)
Copy ROM image (*.img) to CF card.
Remove the backup battery and set it aside. Remove the main battery, then reattach it. Press and hold down Contacts, Reset , scroll in, and power then release both power and reset at the same time and continued holding contacts and scroll in for twenty seconds, then release.

Without the '.img file this will Run built-in diagnostic utility

There's gotta be more tricks out there (or maybe even a FAQ which means I've waisted everybodys time )

Just to let people know that dont try the last one unless you are prepared to lose all your data i tried the holding in the reset holding in contacts and holdingin jog dial let go of the reset switch and it ran some white screen that looked for an image then kept typing FFFFF across the screen and then did a hard reset. So be careful.

I think our own member anpaza discovered this, not by accident but on purpose, by disassembling the entry point (trying to do a linux boot, I believe). There's some discussion of it here: http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...threadid=31000.

pswets is right . . . it wasn't found by accident. . .

I too would recommend that you know EXACTLY what your doing before attempting this.

(The most obvious requirement is that you actually have a ROM image to boot)

I know of at least one user who tried to install the X5 ROM image (the illegal copy on the web) to his X3 (thinking it would enable Bluetooth [which as we all now now is NOT available on an X3 regardless of what's stamped on the antenna]) and ended up with a coaster.

That would have been handy before i just gave my X5 back (with wm2003) for a REFURBISHED X5 with ppc2002 cuz my ax failed to do the upgrade from A04 to A05.

Anyway, its still nice to use if u have probs in the future...i wonder if it would work with an SD Card...

It's just your standard Neo Omigawdian language, there are many & varied dialects in the world today, often brought on by the most ordinary of pretexts.

I am quite sure there were a plethora of both Nor'easter and Suthun branches being spoken and/or yelled down in Houston last night!

I've only got 2 questions about the last one.

Would it work if u put the .img on the SD Card?
What is the diagnostic utility that runs? I dont want to try it cuz Caspan said it cleared his ax....

Haven't tested with an SD card. I see no reason why it wouldn't work though.

The diagnostic simply checks the internal workings of the Ax. The screen fills with "testing RAM... OK" etc.

Ok, i backed up all my data onto my SD and proceeded to do enter the combination (i must have looked like a nitwit with the stylus in my mouth :D)

Well i came up to a screen (it searched for anything on my CF Card) where it asked me if i wanted to do the test or cancel...so i press cancel and BOOM! all my data is gone...so i was like, heck, i'll just do the test and it ran me through pressing all the buttons, testing audio, LCD etc. and then went back as if the ppc was new.

So i just restored the backup and now i have everything back...

Would like someone to still check if u can do an upgrade from the SD...
