All I wanted to do was get rid of some icons that didn't go away after removing a program. Someone said to do a full backup and restore to get rid of the dead icons. So I went to Backup and backed up "All Files" to my SD card. Everything went just fine. 31Mb of data in the backup file. Did a hard reset on the Ax and started the restore. The restore "thermometer" gets to exactly 50% and then the backup program just aborts and dumps me back to the desktop... No error message or anything, doesn't say it's even done performing the restore. After a subsequent soft reset it's apparent that nothing got restored as none of my programs other than the ones in ROM are on the machine anymore. I copied the backup up file from the SD card to the PC to make sure I had a second copy. I then deleted all the entries on the SD card and copied multiple copies of the backup back to the SD card thinking the SD card may be the problem... it is a 256Mb Chinese SanDisk SD card after all... I tried restoring from 4 different copies of these backups, always with the same result. So I'm guessing the SD memory is fine... Any ideas??? An I not doing this right?:rolling:

Don't know if this will help. I used to get hangs when using an SD card. From posts yesterday I learned that you can use the Built in Storage (BIS) Folder to put back-ups into.
It might work better from there.
You mentioned a copy on your pc. Can't you restore from Activesync?
Good luck, hope you get your data back.

MrKlaatu's right (as always) you must reset the regional settings first. Having said that, if he hasn't why would the restore protocol even start?

Yes I restired all the User Info before I started. I had seen that in another post before I started. I have now tried to copy one of the copies of the backup file (.bak) to the BIS from the Storage Card. It copied about 90% of it to the BIS then errored out with an "Error Code 183. Cannot create a file when that file already exists". I'm not sure what that means as I cannot find any refereences to what the error code means. At least in layman's terms. So, I have this backup of my data on the SD card. It won't restore without wigging out. Is there some way to restore the backup to the main memory using Active Sync.
This MIGHT work: you could try transferring the file to maybe a friends compact flash card and restoring from there. I have read about numerous problems from trying to restore from sd cards. Like i said MIGHT work, have no real evidence to support my idea tho.

Try pasting a backup to the following directory on your p.c.
C:\Documents and Settings\Name?\Application Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles\Your_Name\Backu p.stg (obviously Name? and Your_Name refer to you!)
I'm running XP & AS 3.7.1 so yours may be slightly different.
Then try restoring from Activesync.
Once restored the device will need a soft reset to put this right.

Also in the future to get rid of icons that are still hanging around after a program has been removed all you have to do is go thru explorer and delete the icon. no hard reset required.

I've just read this properly! The backup created by Activesync has a .stg file type and yours appears to be .bak.
I've seen this before in Backup Plus (a pc backup utility). This may be why the file can't be opened by the ppc.
How did you create the backups?
Jogga:rolling:
All the backup files that I have were created with the "Data Backup" program that is built into the Axim and the backups were saved directly to the SD card. As far as I can tell, the backup file. is just called "Backup", doesn't have a "file extension". I guess I just used the term .bak in a generic sense when I referred to it earlier.
I've got a new 512Mb Kingston SD card coming in the mail so I guess I'll copy the files to it and try to see if that works.
I'll try the other suggestions in the mean time... Thanks for all your help. I never cease to be amazed at the knowledge available on this site. I sincerely thank each and ever one of you that give your time, most often with little thanks.
I tried looking for the Active Sync backup at the location you suggested....
C:\Documents and Settings\Name?\Application Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles\Your_Name\Backu
p.stg
I am also using Win XP and AS 3.7.1 and I don't even have an Application data folder... Did find an ActiveSync folder but there is no "Profile" folder in it. Also searched for a "backup.stg" file but I don't have one. Evidently I've never made a "backup" using Active Sync...
To get rid of the icons hanging around after a program is uninstalled you say to use Explorer to delete it... Do you mean the "File Explorer" program on the Axim?

Ok, but you do have a backup of some kind, the .bak file extension indicates that.
Have you downloaded another back up programme?
By the way (stupid question) if you're running XP you should have the Application Data Folder indicated: you did look on the pc and not the ppc?
I'm running out of ideas now, the only thing I can think of is to try changing the file extension on a copy of a back up and try reinstalling that. YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. I have no idea what could happen!!

OK, I think I'm getting to the bottom of this. The reason I could n't find any of the folders you referenced is because you have to select one of the options to "look in hidden files and folders" when you use the XP search function or it won't find it.
So, I DO have the folders you referred to... but I had never made a backup using Active Sync, I've only used the SD card to create a backup file using the Data Backup program on the Axim.
Now I've made a backup using Active Sync of what I currently have on the AXIM, i.e. just the basics. This created my "backup.stg" file. So the only complete "backup" I have is still on the SD card and it is called "backup" with no file extension. Now I'll see if I can simply replace the one I just made with the Active Sync backup program. I'll replace it with the one on my SD card and cross my fingers. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Nope, didn't work. The "backup" file that I have on the SD card that was created with the Data Backup program on the Axim does have a file extension (if you change the view to be able to see what it is....) and that extension is .dbk which apparently is different than the .stg backup that is created by the Active Sync backup program. So that was a bust. I'll just have to wait to get my new SD card and copy the .dbk file to it and see if I can do a restore. Thanks for all your help.
