What programs need to be in MAIN memory

Trying to figure out which programs need to be in Main memory to work properly. Trying to speed up my X3i. Please list any programs you know that have to be installed in MAIN and which work fine in built in and storage cards. Thanks, Kevin;)

Mostly everything is fine installed on memory cards and built in storage, but i believe .dll files from the programs that need to be in the "/windows" directory have to be in main memory. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though.

If you're using database programmes, especially with large databases, you may find that they work better when installed to the main memory: it tends to be faster.
Mikeo's right though most should save to a card, where they don't the vendor normally points this out.

All today screen plug-ins should be in Main memory. These include :-

Today Plus
Calendar Plus
Icbar
Wisbar
Gigabar
BattMemTime

also Agenda Fusion and Pocket Informant both work best (correctly) in Main Memory.

There may well be others.

Your main file manager eg resco should be in main memory in case you change cards around.

Anything that needs to be in main memory should be just fine in built in storage, right? I would think that is on ROM so it should work just as fine as if it were in the regular main memory.

I usually install the programs that are in constant use to main memory, like Today plug-ins, storage utilities, skinning programs, and backup utilities.

Is there an easy way to relocate apps? Up to now, being a newbie, I just let things go to whatever the app developer says is the default.

So is there an easy way to move things, or does this necessitate a uninstall and reinstall?

Thanks.

To change the location of an already Installed Application, yes...this is the best and safest way to do it.

However, during initial installation you can select where ASync loads the Application by checking NO when it asks if you want to install to the Default Location. A drop-down box will then let you select where to send it.

As said above, certain types of applications NEED to go into Internal Memory..........even though they will generally let you choose differently.........just don't do it.

Think of it this way.... If the program has files your Axim will need when you turn it on then it needs to go in the main memory. Otherwise it can go on a storage card (which is the case for most programs).

Could someone clear up the "tiitles" being used. There's "MAIN", "Rom" "Built In", etc.

Is there really three choices:

1) storage card - a separate piece of afternarket hardware of SD or CF format depending on X5 X3, etc

2) ROM - while the system is loaded there, I believe I read where there's still some memory there, no?

3) RAM - what's left of the 64 mb of memory (I have an X3 and I don't know exactly what comes in an X5) after your programs and user data is entered.

Please correct this if it's wrong.

So our conclusion is that Today apps, or things that need to run right at startup need to be in MAIN. Is that ROM?

Thanks,

Jerry

Actually you put it in the ram as things like \program files\ and \my documents\ are stored. It is the fastest and as long as its powered non volitle. install in main memory

No. Today screen plug-ins must be in Main memory (RAM) to work properly.

Agenda Fusion and Pocket Informant must also be in Main memory for the button operations to work properly.

These programs will not work correctly/at all in BIS on on a Memory Card.

Jerry Nearly right, but Main Memory is RAM not ROM. As you say the ROM contains the Operating System and the left over space is called Built-in-Storage. Depending on which model X3 you have, this will be either about 10MB (if you have 32MB ROM) or 44MB if you have 64 MB ROM - the OS uses up about 22MB.

The advantage of BIS is that the ROM is non-volatile and its contents will survive a hard reset or a total power failure.
