Serial VS USB for Infrared IrDA link...

In my college, we want to add Infrared functionality to a few of our many computers (so people could drag/drop files from and to PocketPC, Palm, Phone...)

First problem is that most of the Infrared devices now are a simple USB plug in (keychain size) and we can not use that, because students will take them out/steal them.
1. Unless anyone has any ideas on how to solve this problem?

So that leaves us with fewer options - to buy (few of which are still available) infrared linking device which is not detachable from a cord via which it connects.

The only thing is now that we are thinking if there is a difference between USB connected or Serial connected? They will be connected securely to a hidden PC anyway, but bolting a serial connected device gives us better security.

2. So is there any difference in performance, compatability, speed... from serial vs USB connection?

Thank you...
