Back up 'not enough space'
I have had my Axim 3X for about 5 months and love it. There have been minor things here & there, but nothing a soft reboot couldn't fix.
The data backup to back up all data was working, but not it won't. It says "There is not enough space to back up data. Insert another card."
I know this is a problem since I'm trying to back up to a new - working SD card with 128 MB and my PDA maxes out at 64 MB.
I can Back up PIM databases only but it just won't let me do the full backup.
Any suggestions?

save it to your desktop
I have never done a full back up of my system and saved it on my Axim. What I do instead is back it up to my desktop at work and I never have any problems. Its also safer (I think) because if you must perform a hard reset you know that your data is stored somewhere besides your Axim. Saving it to your SD card might be dangerous if you loose it. Hope this helps and good luck.

Safety
I am on the fence here. I used to think that it was not a good idea to back up to the SD card, that it until I tried Sprite Backup Standard edition. The security issue is definitely valid, but I've found a workaround for it.
I use sprite backup to create a self-executing backup to my storage card. If someone finds it and restores the backup, they'll have to get past the 1-Pass security screen ;) So that takes care of that.
What I do is use sprite backup to backup to my SD card, and then use AS to back up to my PC. I also backup my SD card to my PC on a weekly basis.
So, if you're going to use the backup to SD card method, make sure you have a security screen enabled at startup when you back up.

I thank you for your thoughts, they were things I was not thinking about. I do sync with my home computer daily and save all pertinent files to disk no less than weekly.
However, I just wanted to be able to do a full backup with the PDA alone if I needed to. Also, afraid this might be indicative of another problem.

It may be that your settings include in the backup the SD card to which you are backing up. So it keeps adding the backup file to the backup file until it runs out of space. Make sure the SD card is NOT in the backup list.

Thank you for your post!
That would seem to make sense, but the problem began before I even got the SD card. It occurrs with or without the SD card inserted. However, I have more than one backup on my internal memory.
Do you know how I can delete backups I no longer wish to keep? How can I check to see what I'm backing up? All I know how to do is choose 'all' or only PIM databases, where I can choose which PIM databases I want. I would love to figure out how to modify my backup list to exclude other backups!

Managing Backups
Here's the method I've found the best for my Axim Backups.
I name my backups as follows: mmddyy. So todays backup was named 061004. This way I know which was created on which day.
So, what I would do today would be to create a backup named 061004, copy yesterdays backup from my storage card to my PC, and then delete it from my storage card. This way I always have the most recent backup on my SD card, and the older ones on my PC should I ever need them again. You can do the same with ActiveSync and the Dell Backup Utility.

I've been reading all these posts (and I suppose this is obvious to everyone but me) but I don't see anywhere whether you must remove your SD card before backup or especially before hard reset? And should you uninstall the program you think is the problem before backup, as well? (I assume if you don't you will just be reloading whatever was wrong in the first place--No?).

Removing the SD card before a hard reset has absolutely no bearing on the data on the card. It is unaffected by a hard reset. Also, the app that is backing up the date is integrated into the ROM, thus it cannot be uninstalled. The backup utility is simply reporting that there is not enough room to accomodate a full backup.

Thank you for the clarity. I piggy-backed on this thread because it's the closest I came to my problem. I'm going to do this thru active sync, but hearing all the horror stories has made me NERVOUS. I love this site and how patient and informative you all are. thanx again.

I can't get my X5 to recognize my new Haicom 303CF. I'm sure it's because I mistakingly ran the little disc that came with it before I installed the map software. My supplier (who has been even more patient than you guys) replaced my unit, but I still get "card not recognized", "no value" and the like, so it would appear I have left some errant drivers in there, even though I tried to delete everything off that disc. So, he suggested I should do a hard reset and start over. (I even downloaded GPS Monitor as suggested by GPS Passion--nada) I'm sure it's something I've done. I'm just trying to undo it--whatever it is. That's why my concern about whether to uninstall the "program" before I start.

woochy, there is a little glitch that you haven't thought of. What if the person takes your card only? they would be able to extract information from that backup - IF NOT, they can hardreset - then restore the back up. - OR - if the backup is in pbf format (not a self extraction exe) they can hard reset, install spritebackup, then restore the pbf....
just a thing that i thought of.. ;)

Foilled again
Actually, I like woochy, it as a nice ring to it, I'll have to talk to the admin and see if I can get my screen name changed ;) . . .
Anyhow, I thought about this after I posted. If someone wants to go through all that, God Bless em. I really don't keep anything personal on my Axim anyhow, so it wouldn't really matter in my case. Also, I noticed that when I restore a Sprite Backup, the 1-Pass screen is disabled anyhow. That's like having a 13 year old poodle to guard a mansion, useless.
So you are correct indeed, I'm gaked even if they took my memory card only. But why would they only take the memory card? I don't think they'd even know where it was or how to get it out, unless of course I was at an Aximsite convention :D

Yes, I can see why backing up to the SD card could be risky, but like Woochy I have no information that anyone would find worth stealing the card itself over.
I'm still wondering though if anyone has had problems with their backup program (not Sprite) saying the files were too big to back up. It's giving me the same huge number with or without the SD card inserted, and claims my 128 card is not big enough to do a full back up. It does let me do backups for my PIM systems only.
I've done a soft reset on my Axim X3 and this does nothing. I've used the sync software to do a backup on there. However, I'm just not overly motivated to buy software to do what the Axim should be able to do - a basic backup.
I don't know anything about hard re-sets and maybe this is something I need to do, but without being comfortable about my current backup procedures, I hesitate to do that.
I appreciate knowing about Sprite - it is great to have a software that is so highly recommended shared, as I don't know how I would have found it on my own. But I hate to just rush out and buy software to get around the problem when I don't know what my problem is!
Thanks for all your help, you all are really great and provide a lot of good information on this site!
