Installing Software & minimizing risk.

Seems from time to time folks complain about software crashing their Axim. With Windows Mobile 2003 second edition, it's often the case that software was written for an older OS. So, some installs can be "risky"....

What I found works is to get the bare minimum setup - owner info, internet settings, ActiveSync partner established, etc. Then, do a full backup.

Now, install some software, and do a new backup (to a different file name). After some use, if the unit seems stable, install some more software, and do another backup (again, to a different file name).

Now, if you reach a point where installing something completely scrambles or freezes the unit (i.e., even soft reset won't help), just do a hard reset. and restore from the most recent stable backup.

I know doing the backups is a pain, but it's much quicker than re-installing and re-configuring apps over and over and over....

Sorry if this advice has been posted before, I searched and didn't see this particular approach spelled out.

It's mostly a matter of common sense...but seeing as how many people lack that altogether, this should be a helpful thread. Way to go! :approve:

It's more of a problem of so many unstable programs floating around even though they are touted to work with Mobile 2k3 and the Axim... some stuff just doesn't install properly and has nothing to do with an owner error.

I've decided not to install anymore things on my Axim for a while. I'm tired of installing crappy, glitchy software and having dirty uninstalls that lock up, freeze or weird ActiveSync out.
