Is it a good idea to store all your programs into an SD card?

instead of the built in storage?

What did most people do?

depends.

I had an x3 that i use only the SD card for programs and music (256Mb) and now since i swapped to an iPAQ /w a 2gb cf, i used it mostly for programs and other things on the cf card instead.

but do notice, the card's performance are actually slower than the internal storage ROM; the ROM is also slower than the internal ram of the unit. depends on what kind of application, i'd recommend for database stuff (i.e. dictionary) go ahead and install into card.

Generally yes. But many people fill up the built-in storage before going to the SD card. Keep the Ram (main storage) as clear as possible.

Anyhing that is used as a today plug-in should be in Main Memory if for no other reason than you may have a different card plugged in when you start up your device. The real reason is is that's the first place the OS looks for plugins and it could lead to a loop or locked device requireing a hard reset.

I keep all my data and programs on a card and have done this since the days of the Atari Portfolio and various Psions. You only have to lose everything once by flat battery to realise how important this is.

There are other programs other than today plugins that you should not store onto your SD card. Something like avi player or something, coz u wouldn't wanna install it to every single SD card that u have if u store avi files in all of em. Generally speaking, think about if u would lose a big chunk of functions by removing that SD that has ur programs in there. Some programs are better left with the axim than the sd.

I was getting errors that my axim was feeling full - I copied everything over to the SD and fixed the shortcuts - I have loads of main memory free (16.49 storage, 22.53 for programs) and 199.92 mb free on the SD card.

I could move even more over.

My SD card is:

usr/local/bin
home/pics
home/docs
home/etc

I keep things simple.

I moved all program files that I put on to Storage Card/usr/local/bin

I use total commander.

I use today plugins in the MM
The rest is in SD. In my case, at least, the slowest part of my AXIM is between my ears so I don't worry about a few milliseconds of slowness.

I'm waiting on a 512 SD Card. When I receive I will install games on it, however my productivity apps will go on the X30. I have read in other threads were installing programs on the SD cards slows the program down. Since I only play cards, Jawbreakers, etc. I think I can risk it.

I don't really notice the programs run slower when you install them on the SD. I have Pocket plus on the RAM and other program (Pocket Informant, pocket Mechanic) on the SD and they just work fine. However make sure if you have x30H you use/run with the highes processor clock (624) :approve:

When you run a program it's code is moved from storage ram to program ram. So programs don't get slowed down by storing them on a memory card. The only part when they loose "speed" is while they are being transferred to program memory.

In sum the only slow down you might notice is while starting the program, but never while running it. :approve:
