To format, or not to format...

I just got a dane-elec 256mb sd card, and on the package back it says "unformatted". Can anyone tell me if I have to format? And how do I do it?

There are a number of ways you can format it, I believe you can format via your PC if you have an SD card reader.

Other apps that will let you format an SD card are:

Pocket Mechanic
Storage Tools
Resco Explorer 2003
SKTools

Hard to say what format to use, the settings that I use haven't been working with some 512 MB cards. I recommend that you not check the "Backup FAT" option.

Good Luck!!

Thanks, Wooch. I have pocket mech. and it has two format options; low level, and logical format. Logical asks for info like clusters and fat. Low level just asks what card. Which way should I go? I thought fat was that stuff that makes it hard to breath when I bend over.

Logical first, Low Level as a last resort. Low Level prepares the media for a Logical format, so let's assume it has been low leveled.

Hmmm. I didn't format either my compact flash or my old fujifilm sd cards back when I first bought this gizmo. I didn't know anything about it. Maybe I'll try it again since you didn't have any problems, Flip.

Hey! It worked! I got 243mb of space, put a freeware program on there and everything is roses and sunshine. Thanks for the tips, friends!
