Exclamation Axim runs slower than old ipaq... use reg hack

For 300mhz... I was dissapointed at the speed.

I downloaded "RegKing" and increased the glyph cache to 26K.

It runs soooooo fast now... I have applied most of the hacks in RegKing and it is still stable.

FYI.

For those who may want to make this tweak manually. Use any registry editor and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\GDI\GLYPHCACHE\

You can change the "limit" value :

4096 : this will slow down the display, but use less memory (default setting on Palm-size PC)

8192 : this is the default value on Pocket PC, average memory/performances

16384 : this will speed up the display, but use more memory, twice the default Pocket PC value (I use this)

32768 : max acceleration, but uses the most memory

Hmmm, My AX (400mhz) was default @ 16384(?), I changed to 32768 and saw no difference in speed or memory usage. I even tried soft booting between changes with no noticable difference. What am I missing? Are all Ax's set at 16384 from the factory?

My Axim came set to 8192 and my previous iPaq was also set the same when I first got it.

As for the performance increase, it is minimal in my experience as well. I would be interested to hear from "vaxgod" on whether he has any performance measurement tools he could provide test results from. I use GAPI Benchmark available from here:

Curious indeed, I received mine at the end of January. I'm wondering if some ware I installed changed the setting. I can't imagine that Dell would be setting some units to 16384 and others to 8192.

ok, here it is

before:
display: 42.06
float: .6207
Fractal: 29.57

after hack:
Display test avg: 42.79
Float: 0.6248
Fractal test: 29.75

I'm just using regking, so I can't even confirm that it actually put the cache back to normal.

The first two before's would be a little higher had I turnned the
switcher bar off.

It doesn't make a difference in the bench... but that's not the point of cache is it?

I think it's when you have 10 apps open and are flipping between them where that makes a difference.

Just an FYI, the familiar Linux distro caches quite a bit by default, probably around 20MB+, although appears to be dynamic.

Is the Pocket PC's cache usage dynamic?

Don't hurt me for being wrong :p
