Are you supposed to enter info in the Domain box? Where do you put the numbers and letters +CGDCONT=1."IP",WAP.CINGULAR"? I HAVE THE $24.99 pKG, also.

Hope you can help.

IVAN,

You rock!

Up until yesterday I was was an AT&T Wireless customer and my dial-up connection between my Motorola V600 and X50v worked beautifully--thanks to the great instructions on the AT&T Wireless site.

Yesterday I switched to Cingular and a V551 and I couldn't connect. Regular support didn't have a clue what I was talking about (and the guy in the store didn't know it was even possible). I was switched to the Product Support dept, and they told me my account had been set up wrong: Media account instead of a data account. They switched me to a data account, which I now know was unnecessary. They also told me to use *99***1# instead of *99#. But that didn't work either.

I called them again this morning and they informed me of the new User ID and Password, which I hadn't needed before. Still no dice. They said they couldn't see anything wrong and that it should work, finally leaving me with "Cingular doesn't support Bluetooth dial-up." Great. Then I found other (conflicting) posts and this one. Thanks very much for putting everything in one place. NO ONE AT CINGULAR MENTIONED THE EXTRA STRING!

I am using the ISP.CINGULAR configuration, and I think that's because I (now) have a data account and not a media account.

The interesting thing from reading the follow-up threads is that some people need the string and others don't. I think I received so many different messages from Cingular, and different forums, that I lost track of which setting combinations I've tried. But using: *99# and the ISP.CINGULAR settings accross the board did the trick, and I'm not touching it again.

Thanks again. This is yet one more time (of many) when online forums have proven more helpful than any official tech support.

Another post of "thanks!" (and hint to newbies....see? SEARCHing works!)

Also wanted to add one bit of additional info that might not be obvious to some. The username and password ARE case sensative. I set everything up lowercase and it didn't work. Changed it to all caps and it works great. :)

I was also using AT&T's GPRS fine until this weekend when I switched to a Cingular dataplan. For what it's worth, I used the settings above with an X50v and a Nokia 6820.

I'll second that Cingular support/store staff is essentially clueless about this. My 6820 was an AT&T phone which I unlocked to allow me to use on the Cingular network....so I had to go through the hassle of changing the mMode configuration to MEdia etc etc etc. GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND! :)

Another data point: T616

I thought I'd add another data point for connecting through bluetooth under Cingular. I have a Sony Ericsson T616.

I followed closely the instructions given above for the 6820 and found my Axim and T616 first trying to connect and then giving me a "GPRS parameters are not supported" error message. Here's the tweaking that worked for me:
First, I created a new data profile on my phone (I found the data profiles under "Data Comm." Because I am a former AT&T customer, I had "AWS GSM" "AWS GPRS" and "MMode GPRS" profiles already. Others might have fewer data profiles on their phones.) I named this new data profile "Axim", and changed only the username and password to WAP.CINGULARGPRS.COM and CINGULAR1 respectively (this is on the phone). This was the 4th data profile on my phone (CID=4).

On my Axim, I then used the dial string *99***4#, I kept the username, password, AND dial string given in the instructions above (I realize this may be redundant, but it worked for me). Creating the extra data profile did the trick for me-- I was suddenly online via GPRS instead of getting the "GPRS parameters not supported" message.

Also, FWIW, I **do not** have any sort of data plan-- I believe that I pay $0.03 per KB for any GPRS usage (I'll get a plan now that I am planning on really using GPRS). At least for previous AT&T/now Cingular customers, you do NOT have to buy a flat-rate data plan to be able to connect your Axim to the internet via bluetooth phone + GPRS.

I know this is an old thread but I had a couple questions I wanted to have clarified before I sign up for a data plan. I have a Moto v551 (Cingular) and an X50v.

1) We'll start off with the easiest question that is mostly a confirmation to make sure I'm not stupid. This will allow me to have unlimited internet access on my PDA connected via Bluetooth to my v551 basically giving me always-on internet connection wherever my phone has service?

2) Service - does this use the Edge network where available or does this use only the slower networks?

3) Will I be able to take/make calls on my phone while still using the internet on my Axim?

4) What data plan do I need? Media Net Unlimited, Data Connect Unlimited, or Laptop Connect Unlimited? Cingular's tech support says Laptop Connect Unlimited but it sounds like Media Net is sufficient?

5) Should I expect different kinds of performance with the different options (Media Net, Data Connect, or Laptop Connect)?

Thanks! Great info so far, I just want to double-check things just in case going with the assumption I'm stupid and you are all smarter. :)

Jaxidian:

1) Yes

2) Edge, however the v551 has a modem so slow that the speeds are about like normal GPRS connection.

3) Yes

4) Media Net Unlimited

5) No

Then what is the purpose of the different plans if they all give you unlimited internet (other than costs which are $20/mo, $45/mo, and $80/mo)?
