Okay, I'm an old Beta tester, so I love these kinds of challenges. I had the same problem of continuously being asked for ID and PW. Yes, gmail's POP3 settings were set, and I had a test outgoing message to myself ready to go. Here is what I did, step by step, and now all works well.
1. Set gmail to, "Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on."
2. Connect and send myself the email.
3. Changed gmail to, "Enable POP for all mail (even mail that's already been downloaded)" and also selected, "archieve Gmail's copy."
The key here, and one that I have successfully tested time and again, is that you cannot have "trash gmail's copy" selected nor "keep Gmail's copy in the inbox" for mail handling options. If you do, it will
not DL your new mail.
Presumably it would also work for initial settings if you had the "enable POP for all mail" set and also "archieve Gmail's copy", as the archieve option seems to be the trouble maker. However, since mine is now working, I can no longer test that theory.
I am using the port settings (some say it is necessary, others say no), but using the Mozilla setting (I've proudly never used Outlook) for outbound of 587 vs the suggest 465. Per gmail, both work.
Hope this helps some of those with the mysterious problems.
