so after reading through this thread I have my gmail downloading perfectly. problem is, as others have stated, there seems to be no way to retain messages after another send/receive has occured. the previously downloaded messages disappear. is there any way to save your messages on the device?
This is the one that's driving me mad.
O2 XDA Exec - I've tried all the suggestions (eg download headers only, forward to a second gmail account etc) but all I've managed to do is not be able to download anything at all.
HOW on earth can I keep my emails in the inbox without laboriously moving them one by one somewhere else.
The thing that bugs me is that I'm pretty sure that it worked normally the first two days I used it - keeping emails in the Inbox.

Quick correction after further experiment - "Download headers only" DOES work if you set the Kb figure very low - eg 1 Kb or 2KB. If it's too big - eg 5kb - and enough to allow you to download a whole message - bye bye to that message next time you do send and receive!
This is very silly - and I'm sure that there must be a better solution out there somewhere ....

Further correction - even this method is unreliable. It retained messages on two send/receive operations - then threw all away next time.

Hi - I have exactly the same issue in trying to set up gmail as a new POP3 account on my XDA Exec - does anyone have a suggestion or solution? Thanks very much,,,,,,
Hi - I have managed to get my gmail to work on my O2 XDA Exec. This was as a result of emailing O2's technical support at o2datasupport@o2.com who were very thorough and prompt in their reply.
Ok, so, here is the extracted text of the emails I got - suggest you scan thru them all and in particular the 2 things I found I had not done were the SSL setting (that's quite hard to find when you go thru the set-up, I had to complete the settings and then find it using the alternative route O2 suggested), and the adjustment of settings on my gmail email homepage itself - obviously accessed through a regular internet browser, not on the XDA at that stage!). Here it all is:
First email -
""""There are two prerequisites for the email service, a correctly provisioned account & the correct settings in the handsets. I can confirm that your account is correctly provisioned, therefore all you require now are the correct settings for the service.
Please make sure that the internet connection works on your device, this is imperative as your device uses this connection as a form of sending & receiving email.
Below you will find the manual settings for gmail accounts.
How do I manually setup the POP3 settings?
Start > Messaging > Menu > Tools > New Account
Email address: enter your full email address
Tap Next
Your Name: your full name (or can be anything)
User Name: username@gmail.com
Password: your email account password
Tick Save Password
Tap Next
In the Name field you can enter a name for the account (only possible if setting up new account)
Tap Next
Incoming Mail: pop.gmail.com
Outgoing Mail: smtp.gmail.com
Leave the Domain field blank
Tap Finish
Please note, for a gmail account you will need to enable 'Require SSL connection' this can be selected within the messaging option found when setting the account up. Alternatively you can follow these menu map steps;
Start ~ Messaging ~ Menu ~ Tools ~ Options ~ (Select Gmail account) ~ (Keep tapping next until you reach the 'server information section') ~ Tap on 'Options' ~ Then select next, which will then take you through to the 'Require SSL connection' """"
Second email -
""""A common problem which people encounter when trying to integrate a Gmail account is the fact that there account has not enabled pop3 access. This is imperative; by enabling pop3 access what you are saying in effect is "My emails can be downloaded on an external device, such as XDA"
I would recommend that you login to your Google account, once you are logged in I advise you to check the settings section, from there you will see an option of "Enable pop3 access" , please make sure this box is ticked.
I suspect, the above will provide a resolution, if not, I would recommend that you contact Google, as Google would be able to advise of the settings required within your account for allowing external access. The problem is not with the device, as the device can connect to the internet, hence the issue is email account orientated. """"
My Gmail account was working absolutely fine on the native PPC email client and on WebIS Mail 2. I recently changed my Gmail password and since then no matter what I do, I can't access that account on my PPC. It just won't go past authorization. Yes, I've changed incoming/outgoing password to the new one I have right now (verified and re-verified) and POP is enabled in my Gmail account.
Just to check if I'm doing everything right, I created a new Gmail account and went through the same setup process on the native and WebIS Mail client. Behold! Everything works fine! I just can't access my primary Gmail account after changing my password.
Anybody got a clue?

Is this connection only through Active Sync? If so, mine is not working. I keep getting the following message: Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device. Make sure you are connected and that your e-mail account settings are correct. Then, try to download messages again."
I checked and my Gmail POP settings are enabled.
Can anyone tell me if it's possible to get the messages through wi-fi?
Thanks for all you help in advance.
