Soft reset performed a HARD reset

I was just about to leave work yesterday, pulled my Axim from the cradle, and went to open an Excel document. The machine locked, so I performed a soft reset. When it came back up, it promped me to reset my stylus!

Yup-- to my horror, all my information was gone. So, I spent the next 3 hours re-installing everything, and then set the ActiveSync to do an incremental backup everytime I dropped it into the cradle.

What a pain! I heard from a friend that sometimes static electricity will fry your device-- and just now I got the piss scared out of me when I set my Axim into the cradle to see a blue arc of electricity jump from the Axim to my Cradle.

Anyone else out there with an electrifying personality? I think I am going to invest in one of those anti-static mats. (I think its the plastic floor mat my chair sits on that generates the static electricity)

Ouch, that one hurt. I've thought about getting one of those mats a while ago but just never did it. I noticed the other day, however, when I plugged my cradle power cord into the wall, there was a spark...guess I just got lucky that time. But, I WILL be getting one of those mats.

Personally, I don't think it's a good idea to auto-backup.
If you have a problem that requires a hard reset to fix, you might backup the problem and corrupt the restore.
I only backup when I want to, when I'm sure the machine is stable ... in a condition I want to return to some day.

You access the incremental backup form Active Sync (on the PC) in Tools>Backup/Restore, but only after doing a full backup first. It also gives you the option of auto backups right there.

My friend just did the same thing two days ago. Said he held the reset button for a couple of seconds (which is probably not necessary) and poof, instant hard reset. I am not going to test this, but will not hold the reset too long.

Did you hold the reset down. I know, its not supposed to hard reset unless holding the power button!

Me too

I apparently held in the soft reset button a little too long last Friday and suddenly I was reinstalling everything.

Just a word to the wise. You only need to tap the reset button.
