Cool Solar Power

Has anyone tried an Axim with a solar powered device such as the iSun? I have an Axim x3i and was wondering I could run and/or charge my axim off solar power. I use my Axim to play mp3s while on my bike a lot and the battery usually dies along the way. I was thinking about getting a bigger battery but then I thought it'd be neat to look in to solar power (I wasn't even sure if anything existed...) So anyway, is this a possibility?

Thanks,
Dan

It would be great if such a thing existed... Does it?

If you do some searching online you'll find solar powered devices that can recharge batteries and/or power some types of portable devices. I read a review of the iSun where someone used it with their Axim x5 or but he said he needed to get the iSun battery pack too... I wasn't sure if that just means the Axim would just run/charge off the battery pack and then the battery pack would recharge from solar power when not in use or what... I would like to talk to someone who has done this...

I've got a small solar panel I use on my sailboat to keep batteries topped off. It comes with an adapter you can plug your dc adaptor into. I know it puts out 12V and 15W with clear skies. Not sure what the current is but I think it was about $80 at West Marine.
I'ts just starting to get nice out here in MI so mabe I can test it out for you.

Electricity

As I mentioned above, I don't think solar power alone (at least with a small, portable device/panel) is enough to power the axim so I wanted a device that would output the power from batteries while charging them from the sun. So I was looking at the Coleman Portable Power Kit as it has a battery pack that can be charged from the sun while in use.

I do not know much about electronics/power so can anyone help me figure out what would/should be enough? I have an axim x3i and on the ac adapter it says "Output: 5.4V - 2410mA". On the battery it says "3.7V - 950mAh" but I assume it is the numbers on the adapter that plugs into the axim that I should be looking at. So the device I'm looking at says it outputs a max of 5V @ 400mA. So how much voltage and amperage do I need? Can anyone tell me if this would be enough to power the axim?

I've never had any real luck with portable solar panels and power-hungry pdas. My biggest portable panel at the moment will charge 4AA batteries using about 15 hours of direct sunlight (aka two days worth). They're meant for rather small power requirements like boosting your cell to make an emergency call or recharging your GPS before you get desperate and eat your friends. There are some that have battery packs like the aforementioned iSun, but if you're going to do that, why not just get an external battery that you can charge at home in 2 hours or less?

Or, since you're on your bike, grab one of those little generators that clip to the wheel frame and use that for the power source. You can find them to normally run headlamps for the bike, but with some creative engineering I'm sure it could be changed.

Or even wind powered. Hook up a generator to your propellor beanie and charge your axim in your hat!

LOL! A Beanie...

I've always been fascinated by Solar power generation, but I just don't think it's really practical yet when it comes down to it.

It would be really cool to have a nice little device for it though. But we can't even get a controller to play games on it...so....

Can anyone tell me the minimum amount of power required to run the axim (x3i) w/o draining the battery?

I think much of it is in the battery level.
Like when its completely drained and you charge the secondary battery at the same time, the charger will output 5.4volts at 2.4Amps dont remember the equation, but thats a heck of a lot of watts.
If you can manage to generate 500ma then I think you cna do OK with it as thats how much those usb ports output.

>_< hope i didnt screw up the mA and A and all that stuff.
