I'm in the market for a new car and happen to be interested in a BMW 3 series. I've heard they have bluetooth built-in for use with a BT enabled phone. Just wondering if it's possible to BT audio from my x50v to the car sound system this way. Anyone know if this is possible?

If it is for bluetooth headset/handsfree it is probably bluetooth audio gateway service, which supports a mono microphone and a mono speaker - i.e one channel each way. It's not to great for sound quality.
However if they designed it for listening to music via bluetooth then it wil use A2DP profile, which supports stereo high quality audio, in which case the sound will be much better. If it important, ask the dealer if you can try it out?
Just to let you know....I just purchased a 325i a few weeks ago. I wanted to play music from Windows Media player through the Harmon Karden sound system. Got on the Axim site here looking for an iPod look alike interface without much success. This morning I went in to the dealer for setup and ended up buying the $39.00 AUX cable. Pretty simple install (just ask for ALL the installation info). It's not hard (the service person even told me to save the 1 hr. labor and ended up being right).
Very happy with the result. Windows Media player sounds great through the sound system. Multiple apps running concurrently. It's a pretty geeked out ride now.
However, the audio output level from the Axim is not up to line levels from other devices so you have to turn up the volume on the Axim (it's not BMW's fault). However, very CLEAN SOUND!
Anybody know how to get more volumn?
I would guess that you can not use the BT gateway....We have one on our car and it does not work for anything but phones as it locks other devices out somehow
plus, as said earlier, it probably wouuld not sound the best
