UMPC platforms will enable exciting new usage models and provide significant new growth opportunities. As an ISV and Content Provider, you’ll have the opportunity to make your current applications and content available to more people in more places on more devices. As an IHV, you’ll have the opportunity to target your hardware and peripherals for the UMPC. As an OEM or ODM, you’ll be able to deliver a new class of platforms to your customers. And as an Operator or a Retailer, you will be able to generate new revenue streams for your business. In short, the UMPC platform provides you with an opportunity to redefine how people think about mobility today and tomorrow. So what can you do?
  • Incorporate the UMPC into your development and deployment plans
  • Focus your development to enable thinner, lighter, smaller UMPC platforms
  • Design with low power in mind to enable long battery life
  • Accelerate the UMPC Ecosystem: Platforms, Peripherals, Applications, Content

I like the Origami project from Microsoft, but I still prefer a much more ultra mobile device such as the K-Jam-8125-Wizard. Hopefully it will evolve with even better screen resolution (VGA?), much faster processor, and GPS.

Hopefully we'll learn more today about the UMPC and even more on 3/9 about Origami.

I am interested in what Microsoft have come up with, the facts, not any rumours going around the internet!

My take is that UMPC is a new platform (ie PocketPC) that the Microsoft Origami project just happens to be part of, one of many models to come. Based on the variety of leaked photos of small tablet-like devices, I think this is a platform that many manufacturers are working on models for.

I just don't think the Origami/UMPC will be mobile enough to appeal to wide array of NEW users. (gadget/device junkies will rejoice) but people who are new to the genre will most likely pass in favor of keeping their existing laptops and cell phones. What's everyone else think?

If the specs can compete with a low end laptop with prices to match I'm sure loads of people will love to have one. I just see that if they are going to be small, there will be no room for a CD/DVD drive (apart from external ones) and a lot of people use them everyday.
As long as it is semi powerful, very good batery life, nice screen, and high storage it will be well in for a chance to compete with laptops and PDA's.

I think you are right, and Gates claims it will be priced right. But how funtional can it be if there is no CD drive or Keyboard? I think it has to be fully funtional with a keyboard. I do not beleive a qwerty will suffice either.

If a qwerty keyboard does not suffice, what are you after? A computer that writes what you think?? .

As long as the touch screen is of good quality and you can use a larger keyboard so it is easy to use the stylus or your fingers then I can't see any problems. Maybe a software version of the optimus eyboard would be good. But the advert that was leaked showed a device in a book cover style case with a keyboard built into it, that would do really, case and keyboard in one.

If they do not contain a CD drive then I can see this as being its biggest downfall. Hopefully they will have some USB in them.

We will see on Thursday. Same day I get some of my exam results .

See, that's what I'm talking about. Working spreadsheets without a full keyboard is not realistic. And if you have to have a wireless option, then that too defeats the purpose of being a stand alone device. I dunno, I am just not seeing it as the next big thing. that doesn't mean I won't want one, but I just haven't agree'd with it's place in our everyday life yet.

I like the keyboard built into the case idea!

I know what you mean, I wouldn't mind getting one purely because they sound cool. We won't be able to tell if they are practical until reviews are released. It could be a complet
