I ended up buying a nice Gateway laptop for $480 last week. It's got:
-DVD +/- R/RW
-1 GB RAM
-120 GB HDD
-15.4" widescreen (ultrabright)
-5-in-1 card reader

MUCH better deal than the EEE PC. I"m happy with my choice. :)

Yeah, I was looking into this until I saw that in the US the prices are well over $200 ($300+) and then it's not worth it after all.

Well the bigger the laptop the cheaper they tend to be. Of course if you just need a destop replacement laptop then you will be paying a lot for the ultramobile size which you don't need or want.

The eeepc like all ultramobile PCs is only worth the cost if you actually need or want a computer that you can actually carry around with you everywhere. If you compare the eeepc to other ultramobiles or even devices like PDAs then the price is not so bad. If I get a eeepc myself it will be to replace my PDA as a carry around everywhere computer device.

With the advent of web 2.0, you can now pretty much find online applications to do the most common tasks, such as word processing (open office through a web browser), photo editing, etc. Therefore a device like this doesn't need much power. However, I've seen videos on youtube of people running 3D CAD applications on them, and even counterstrike source!!

I do still think that there's a place in every gadget geek's armoury for a PDA though.... long live the axim!!

You obviously haven't carried your laptop around very much - for work everyday, interstate, overseas. Cheap laptops tend to be heavy. After a while, you realise that portability is a very nice feature to have, unless the laptop is strictly a desktop replacement, in which case, there is no more to add.

The EEE weighs around 0.9 kg and is the size of a paperback book. It can fit in your briefcase or luggage, and you wouldn't even know it was there. It is very functional, despite the small screen, and comes with Linux - but Win XP can be installed easily.

Ultraportable light laptops are usually much more expensive than larger better specced laptops, but the EEE has turned this around by also being the cheapest laptop. The price of the EEE is cheap enough so that if it became damaged or lost whilst travelling, I would not be as concerned as if I carried an expensive ultraportable (eg Sony VAIO TZ)

I love my 13 inch Macbook which is a pleasure to use, but since buying the EEE, the Macbook stays at home, and the EEE goes everywhere with me (in addition to my X50v of course).

The EEE is also a hacker's dream in regards to maximising it's potential, but is also suitable for computer illiterates/young children if you stay within its customised Xandros interface.

I think it will sell millions.

This, sir, is where you are wrong. I have carried it around daily since I got it. It's invaluable in my schoolwork at LSU, and it's not bad at all. More portability would be a little nicer, but my laptop is perfect for my daily usage. :approve:

The other day i was in the PC market and i saw the Eee PC... so i wanted to give it a try..

the one they had on display was the 4G version and had Win XP installed.... IMHO because of 512 MB RAM it was pretty sluggish...but the techie guy there said that i could upgrade the RAM till up to 2 GB... [i have my doubts].. well then looking at my cynical expression he said that he would give me one with the pre-installed linux.. :D

i really liked the device but my first impressions were that the keyboard was way too cramped and if u need to do some serious data processing work or type out that urgent appeal for the court i certainly wouldnt recommend this one... but i say this only coz i have large digits... maybe someone with smaller ones might actually adapt themselves... i always thought when u sue a new product its always a question of time and practice before u get used to the layout if the key or the keyboard...

but my first impressions here were that no matter how long i use this i wont be able to type comfortable on this keyboard... i hope im wrong coz i liked the laptop a lot and im understating my excitement. i just hope that i prove myself wrong and someday im able to use the EeePC effectively and without worrying about my digits..

You may want to look into the new HP 2133 Mini-Note. The keyboard is supposedly a lot more comfortable to type on, while being very portable and low-cost like the eee PC.

Interesting, bringing up an old, dead thread. I only clicked it because someone mentioned it (back in 2007) and I just bought one last week, in 2009.

Not remarkable, that two years later the configuration of the ASUS EEE has changed for the better.

I got mine and it is, as some mentioned, a mini PC, or an ultra small notebook. It is GREAT.

I bought this to replace my large Lenovo (IBM) notebook that I had to lug around. It weighs 9 pounds with adapter and case. This EEE weighs 2.5 pounds with adapter.

More important is how in 2009 these come configured. for US $260 I got:

Windows XP home installed.

2GB of RAM!!

160GB hard disk, a faster SATA drive, NOT an ATA

Built-in SD card reader (SDHC, not the slower version)

Network port (of course)

Three USB 2.0 ports (not the stingy one or two that others come with)

Almost full-sized feeling QWERTY keyboard.

TFT "square" display, plays movies great (with my external DVD-RW drive)

Other standard notebook specs.

In fact, this set up on my desk next to my full size notebooks, this looks like a mini notebook.

At this price and specs, I would say this is NOT a netbook (note I said "net") it's a subnotebook. The inclusion of the 160GB hard disk, USB ports and 2GB RAM make this a notebook, IMHO. The net appliances of old did not have these specs.

And of course, the $260 price is insane. I paid double that for my Dell X50v in 2004. Even if this was $400 it would be a deal considering all one is getting for that price.

TheGimp, which model did you get?

I just got a 1000HE to replace my 701 4GB Surf. Wow, have things progressed! It's a beautiful machine, but I wish it were just a tad lighter and more smudge resistant. I'm going to have to get some sort of skin or else the fingerprints will drive me crazy!

Just to say I have had my Asus 1000 40g ssd 10" eeepc (upgraded to 2g ram and XP pro) for close to a year now, and I couldn't be happier. 8hrs battery life and that is no exaggerration, (the one day commuting they brag about resulting from the auto-hybrid engine.)
I am a writer and I give it a hard slog everyday when I don't want to sit bolt upright at my desktop.
For frequent travel it is perfect.
All that to say, though, I still cannot do without my AXIM x30H, which I have been using for years. After all, it fits in the pocket, and netbooks can't do that!
