As a long time owner of Dell Axims I have been very happy with them but have found that my X51V no longer fit the bill for me when I travel. My basic laptop for Travel, work supplied, has been an IBM R52 and as my travels have increased over the last year I have grown tired of hauling it around, underfoot on airplanes, short battery life and just in general a pain in the fanny.
As I have searched for a suitable replacement or substitute I have talked to a great many people and researched the Internet trying to find the perfect balance between comfort, portability and functionality.
The ASUS 1000HA has answered the call and answered it well. Its light weight, has a long battery life and with a 160 GB hard drive certainly capable of large amounts of data storage.
Initial set up was incredibly easy. Mine came equipped with XP home and I am content with that as an OS, 1 gig of RAM has preformed adequately and with a built in SD card reader, 3 USB ports and a standard network connection as well as wireless its ready to preform in a multitude of environments. Also equipped with a Mic and earphone connectors, Oh its also equipped with an external connector for video output or external monitor.
A built in Webcam is very sharp for those who desire video conferencing. Bear in mind this device does not come with a DVD / CD player reader so you have to have an external source for data transfer but come on the group on this site will have no trouble figuring out the many ways of transferring data to and from the device. I have an external DVD?CD drive that is USB connected and its a snap to set up and do its thing.
I also have several thumb drives and again they pop in and your off to the races on data transfer.
Keyboard is approximately 92% the size of a normal keyboard and has a standard layout so its pretty easy to navigate. The touch pad is fairly easy to adjust to and I will probably pick up a small wireless mouse but since most of the time it will be used while on my lap its a low priority.
A friend that has a slightly older model has purchased a long life battery for about $80 and he likes it because it has a bulky rear and elevates the rear of the laptop and makes the keyboard a little more comfortable for him....myself, well I will wait a while and see if I need the extra battery.
So far I have found nothing that I did not expect.....well one thing. It comes in a Glossy Black and A Glossy WHITE....the black does smudge a lot. So if your picky about that you might want to go with the white.
And by the way I picked this beauty up at Tiger Direct for a delivered price of $336....well within my budget. So far so good.

Hey wmrawls, did you ever consider the HE instead?
I just got mine last week and it's everything that it's been hyped up to be, especially the battery life. My only real complaints are 1) it's heavier than what I'd like but I'm kind of a wimp :hide: and 2) it picks up fingerprints like there's no tomorrow.
I've been reading reviews for weeks on these things and they are all pretty much top notch. Well, I just ordered a 1000HE, case and 2GB memory upgrade minutes ago and can't wait to get it. I have never owned a laptop and have been using my PDA as my go to device for information (service manuals for work) and ebooks. A 10.1 inch screen is going to look HUGE compared to my x51v (kind of glad I've never had a laptop to get used to). I don't think I've ever anticipated an electronic device this much before, well except when I got my x51v 2 1/2 years ago. :)

srvctec, let us know what you think of it when you get it!
Got my 1000HE about 36 hours ago and I love this thing! I can't imagine it being any more perfect! If it were any bigger, it would be too big to carry around and if it were any smaller, it would be to small. I booted it up to make sure it worked and then shut it down and removed the battery to install the 2GB 800MHz memory- went smoothly. I've installed the full install of Office 2003 which runs great on it as well as much of the software I run on my desktop PC running XP Pro.
The battery life is UNBELIEVABLE!! Like 7-9 hours so far for both times I've run it down.
edit:
I guess I need to update my info at the left now.

srvctec, glad you are pleased with your purchase. Are you finding it slow to boot up? Mine seems to be booted up (i.e., desktop seems fully loaded) but in fact, it is still working on some processes for a few minutes (it seems). I also find Firefox really slow to load, but Chrome takes just a few seconds.

Mine is super fast booting even before I made a few tweaks as I always do to XP. I've even installed the full version of Office 2003 and it still boots pretty fast, although not as fast as before the install. I estimate total boot time to be about a minute. When it was a fresh install (new, no programs installed) it fully booted in about 45 seconds.
Forgot to mention that Firefox is very fast to load.

Mmm...I must be doing something wrong. What kind of tweaks did you do? I have Office 2007 so maybe i should try 2003 just to see if it makes a difference. I hesitate to do to much at the moment because it's a pain to have to hook up a DVD drive to it to reformat.

If you haven't already, you might want to sign up over here EeeUser ASUS Eee PC Forum That is where I have been learning tons of stuff about these netbooks. One of the first things I did was to disable the page file since I have 2 GB of memory. Windows key + pause key and then the advanced tab/performance settings/advanced and change virtual memory to no paging file. Some good info here as well.
I have read on the forum I mentioned above that Office 2007 doesn't work very well on these netbooks, but Office 2003 works fine.
Hope this helps!

Thanks, srvctec. Actually, I'm already signed up at the EEEUser's forum but obviously, I'm not there often enough! I haven't done any tweaks yet actually, so I'd better get cracking. I'll also have to try Office 2003 as well. Thanks.
