Mad ActiveSync - a pile of cXXX ???

A few days ago things were working ok with Activesync 3.6.
I had a few teething troubles at the beginning but I sorted them out.
Then today for some reason it just isn't working!
I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Sorry about the ranting but I just think Activesync is crap.
I would have thought that they might have ironed bugs out by v3.6/3.7.
This is driving me up the wall. I bought a pocket PC to help make my life easier - not for added frustration...

Now my cradle seems to be good for charging the battery only. It looks so good - what a waste...

It's a shame that Dell can provide the nice hardware but the software isn't up to scratch. I actually like Microsoft most desktop software (or at least the stuff I use anyway). Pity they can't do the same for PPC.

If anyone can tell me what I might be doing wrong I'd be delighted to hear about it. Maybe it's the way I've installed the software onto my PPC? GOK

Worried

Hi Beowulf,

Thanks for your offer. I feel silly now after reading my original post - but Activesync just got me into a bad mood.

Well, I bought a Powerloc Destinator from eBay the other day. I already have a Magellan GPS so was hoping to hook it up to my Axim. I actually went to the trouble of soldering 2 female serial interfaces together to build a null modem. After that was done I put all of the pieces together and tried to install Destinator onto my Axim - but Activesync (3.6) didn't seem to recognise the connection!! I tried fiddling a few things and eventually ended up doing a hard reset and trying from scratch - but no luck. At that point Activesync would show the message "Error connecting" etc. and I almost gave up.

Then I tried Activesync 3.7 but still no joy. (All my reinstallations were done after removing the previous Activesync, folders and registry settings, etc)
My final attempt was to install v.3.5 and finally it worked!
I don't really understand why 3.7 or 3.6 aren't backward compatible.

I still feel resentful of Activesync and I'm concerned that everytime I plug my Axim into the cradle it'll tell me it can't connect.

I'm now in the middle of investigating what I'm losing out by using 3.5 over 3.7?

I feel that the answer will be no, but is there anyone else that provides a service to replace Activesync? I'm pretty disillusioned right now...

Thanks for listening,

P.S. Several hard resets and careful reinstallations can even drive the most sane person up the wall.......

Activesync is unbelievably bad. When I have time this summer I'm going to take a spare PC I have and dedicate it to nothing but ActiveSync.

That is, every time ActiveSync dies, I will reformat and reinstall WinXP and Activesync on the PC and hard reset the PPC and start from scratch. It seems to be the only way right now.

I guess I should consider myself lucky. I had 3.5 and skipped 3.6. I now have 3.7 and yet to encounter a problem. My sync works flawlessly, both wireless and via the cradle.

Sounds like a good idea. Wish I had a spare PC! (Re)installing Activesync is a pain because you have to restart the PC a couple of times, delete folders, etc.

I don't know whether your experience is the same, but restoring a backup never seems to be the same as a fresh installation for me. I always seem to end up performing painstaking reinstallations of all my apps.

You are lucky!! my wireless always conects
as guest!!! (Yes I have tried every suggestion
to fix it...) all though my USB works fine most
of the time...

I would love to be able to sync by wireless
all the time, its so much faster!

If you do a hard reset it fixes your problem Highsider.

In my short-lived experience with Axims so far, I usually find problems with connecting (via cradle) after hard resets.

Anyway I will keep trying.
Thanks

I seem to be having a problem syncing all of a sudden.

It all started when I tried to do the A03 upgrade... part way through, it failed. Anywhere from 10% to 3x%...

So I decided to let it just have the A02 BIOS on there. I restored my backup I made with Sprite Software's Pocket Backup with no problems.

This morning, I figured I'd give ActiveSync 3.7 a shot to see if that was why my A03 upgrade was failing (losing connection). Nope, wasn't it. No biggy, I thought. I'll just restore my backup I made this morning. No luck... craps about part way through. WOW!

I decided to uninstall AS 3.7 and I put 3.6 back on. No luck. Can't restore today's backup or May 7th's backup. What a load of bunk!

Now what do I do? So, I decided to EXCLUDE the files (AT&T's sofware for GSM/GPRS) that the restore was hanging at... no luck, it now hangs at a different point (Ostia's PharosGPS files)...

By the way, I am sycning this all on a Dell OptiPlex GX150. Last week and for a few weeks prior, I had no other problems syncing, not one! Well, except for the attempts at A03.

Any ideas?

I did another Hard Reset, unplugged the USB cable and plugged it into the front of the OptiPlex. This time, instead of failing at 6081 it failed at 6590. I actually thought it was going to make it this time... what a fool I am.

Why does it keep timing out its connection?

It seems you have a problem with the cradle or the usb ports.

This problem is unusual and i say get a replacement from dell, ive never had a problem with the update before.

Then I guess I'll take my cradle home this week and see if it's not the machine I'm using here at work.
