Question Maintenance...Scandisc, defrag...

First off, hello to all... Im wondering if there are any maint apps out there for the Axim X5? Mainly scan disc, and defrag. Does anyone use them, and how well do they work? Will I even need them? I just dunno. So any help would be great. Thanks..

There are some programs that allow you to defrag storage cards and what not. But they seem kind of pointless to me. The way solid state memory works is a lot different from say a hard drive, and will not really get fragmented or see a speed decrease.

If it was really a concern for defragmentation...

Use a USB card readerand copy all the card contents to temporary directory on the desktop. Format the memory card and copy everything back. It should only take a few minutes each way. That would save the cost of the software and give you a better investment buying the card reader hardware.

With all that was siad above, you can encounter problems with your cards (sandisk for example). I had a problem where it said I only had 3 megs free when I should have had 110 free. I downloaded StorageTools from SoftWinter (http://www.softwinter.com). It allos you to do a scandisk and fix problems, and it worked great. It also allows you to format using fat32 which is nice if you have lots of small files on your cards.

no real point in defragging a mem card since all areas of ram can be accessed in the same time. it's not sequential like a hard drive. on the other hand i could see the use in defragging a microdrive for this reason.

Not a defragmenter but a good app to clean up files and get rid of unnecessary junk is REMOVER 0.85

Really good clean up utility, be careful with it though it can remove files you may want or need, so read thru items before you "Delete ALL"

Personally I've found CNetX Flash Format to be quite useful for fixing/formatting SD cards.

Just my personal preference tho
