Defragg

I have storage tools for removable drives. Is there a program to defrag built in storage?

This is a good question, BTW--too bad no one seems to know the answer.

(BTW, for those who think this is a silly question: defragmenting solid-state storage is useful in optimizing caching, and [in principle] under some circumstances can make a sustantial performance difference.)

Had a look around and everything I can find refers to defragging memory cards the only advice I could track down on another site was that a soft reset does a similar job? Other than that it was advice concerning closing down programmes, to ensure they are closed, I use Handyswitcher. The other point raised was the amount of write cycles defragging uses and that this might reduce the life of the memory? Sorry can't find anything else but would be interested to know if there is anything out there.

Exclamation Take as you interpret it folks....I ain't gonna argue the point.

.
.

I'm not sure whether or not Scandisk will do any good or not, but there is no need to defrag a solid state device.

Defraging memory

Quoted from THIS POST, from THIS (rather lengthy) THREAD.

All-in-all, a very good tretise on Fragmentation.
Quote:
The story is different for memory fragmentation, because memory access does not suffer from the data access delays that affect hard drive performance - hard drives are mechanical devices.

To access memory merely requires that the correct address is used for the required memory location. Memory access speed is therefore not affected by fragmentation, because the data is accessed by applying a series of memory addresses as required. The actual bits in the address field that have to change makes no difference whatsoever to a solid state device such as memory.

It's just as quick to change 8 address bits as it is to change 1. Defragmenting memory is just a waste of effort and shouldn't affect performance in any way.
Check these Threads, as well:

Well, that's true as far as it goes, but it doesn't take into account (1) caching or (2) sequential streaming (I'm rusty on this stuff, so I don't even remember if that's the right term), both of which are significantly faster with sequential memory reads, which reads are more common in a defragmented environment.

Now my point is a qualitative one--the precise quantity of speed improvements will vary with the memory architecture and software being used, and may range from practically no difference to a very significant overall speed improvement.
