Hi,

Can anyone help me out with finding a good file explorer? Resco File Explorer won the software award with PPC Mag and I am wondering if that is a good one. They have included it on their Best of Everything 2005 CD but I am interested in getting the Best of Everything 2006 CD as it is cheaper but it has PE Explorer Suite? Does anyone have an experience with these applications? Right now I am using Super Explorer from applian and it seems to meet my needs. Do I really need to be able to Zip files. I appreciate any help as I don't want to spend $$$ if I don't have to. Thanks.

For free - Total Commander

I use Advanced Explorer and I am very happy with it. There used to be a freeware version of it but it has been superceded - If you want that PM me and if I can find it I'll email it to you.

Resco has a good reputation and does included a well regarded registry editor - if you need one of these for free PHM have one.

It's horses for courses try a few until you find what you like best.

Here's my comparision of Total Commander and Resco Explorer:

1- Total Commander opens faster (2 secs versus 4 for Resco).

2- Toolbar icons for Resco is of higher quality/resolution.

3- Total Commander has a tree view as well as a cool virtual 2 Window mode. Basically, you have a virtual two pane Window, each exploring a different directory, and you can switch between them with a press of a button on the right upper corner. I especially like the fact that you can quickly copy files over from one virtual window to the other with the copy button. But no ability to view two panes side by side like Resco.

Resco can have two Windows open at the same time either vertical or horizontal. One Window is basically the tree view and the other is the detailed view. Copying to a destination is not as easy/quick as Total Commander. They should implement the virtual two window mode.

4- Both can zip/compress, but Resco can also encrypt/decrypt.

5- Both give the ability to multi-select (like using Ctrl button in Windows). Total commander can toggle the multi-select with a button on the toolbar, whereas with Resco you have to enable it through the menu (two taps versus one).

6- Resco has the option of enabling a Recycle Bin to prevent accidental deleting.

7- You can drag-n-drop in Resco.

8- Both can make new folders, find, and sort by name, date, etc.

9- Total Commander can create shortcuts.

10- Total Commander has two buttons in the right upper corner to go to the root directory (\) or to go up by one direcotory (..). On the top is also a drop-down bar with a history of recent folders visited.

Resco has the up-one-directory button as well, and also has a history back and forward button.

11- Resco has the ability to create favorites/bookmarks.

12- Both have the ability to view/edit the registry though Resco's is a little bit more powerful.

13- Both can send to IR, but Resco can also send by Bluetooth.

14- Resco has network abilities.

In a nutshell, Resco has more features, though Total Commander can definitely hold it's own and is free and does have some features that I find valuable that Resco does not have.

Great comparison, solara! Just one thing I can think of - TC also has network abilities.

Nice List indeed. I also usually look for freeware but bought the Resco Utility Package. Mostly because of the Networking capabilities. With Resco you can map network shared drives and they will appear as a network folder in the other applications file list. With this I was able to connect to a shared drive with Windows Media and select a folder of mp3s and have WM play all of them with one selection.

Also I think resco fixed some of my bluetooth issues. A diferent Bluetooth stack is listed as one of the features on their site. All I can say for sure is I don't have any trouble transfering files with Blue tooth between my PDA, Laptop and Cell Phone (Motorola V600).

Toss in zip, Registry Editor, FTP, file encription, and a darn impressive pic viewer for $10 more. I did not load the Keyboard thing so I don't know what that does. But I would list Resco file manager as a must have if you want wifi shares access.. Works Great!

 

The best one I've found is GSFinder+. It's free and works very much like Windows Explorer on a desktop PC. I love it. You can find it here. The webpage is mostly in Japanese, but the software is in English and is fantastic!

I also find GS Finder+ to be great. Haven't used TC or Resco enough to do a meaningful comparison though. I have tried both, but didn't like TC's interface as well as GS Finder and didn't like Resco's price as well as GS Finder.

  

Advanced Explorer is no longer free as it used to be, but it is very cheap - about $3 I think.

It is very like Resco and virtually as good and it is the ONLY explorer with a re-cycle bin.

4. Zip support
5. Creates shortcuts


Only thing it can't do that some others can is edit the registry. I, personally, don't miss that.

 

With the normal file explorer, how do you get it to open files on a network?

To open a file simply tap on it. I am not sure what you mean by "...on a network"
