I have been reading the posts on back up software but I still can't decide between sprite and spb backup. I'm leaning towards spb simply because of the price. A little about me and what I use the axim for:
Aside from the normal PIM stuff that activesync backs up, I have many third party apps that don't back up with the built in back up. For instance I have a shopping program that has taken me forever to get just like I want it with prices, aisles, taxes, ect. When I hard reset it takes me hours just to get this program the way I like it. Then there are glucose readings, grades (we homeschool), bible program w/bookmarks, etc. Basically, it's not life or death or loss of job if I have to spend a couple of days putting all this information, just a pain in the neck. Thanks in advance for opinions/experiences!

I haven't used both, but sprite is fantastic. It works on the pc and ppc and has many settings. I backup to both desktop and ppc and if something happens I can get right back up and running quickly.

I use sprite for a few reasons
1) when i bought it, sprite was the only show in town 2) it makes self executing executables.... ie after a hard reset i can open the file and restore without having to install anything first 3) It remembers to back itself up every night, without me having to do anything (i always forgot to use the built in app) 4) I can go from hard reset to fully working in 3 mins..... instead of 3 days including all those configs in various programs and settings So the first time i needed a hard reset the $30 saved me 3 days work, which paid for itself. Spb has some pretty good reviews too.... but i've never needed to try it.

I've used both Sprite Backup and Spb Backup on a WM2K3.2 X50V and highly recommend Sprite.
Backups are really all about risk management, Wendy. Read through the post On Backups linked to off of my View MyPDA.

SPB Backup worked for me the one time I used it.
Sprite for WM5, however, doesn't do the self-extracting exectables anymore, for some reason, but it's a lot better at doing certain things like incremental backups (which SPB cant), and also with backing just certain elementals of the OS up.

I use Spb Backup and it works great for me. The previous message says that Spb can't do incremental backups is not correct. Yes, it can.
I have never used Sprite; however, I do like the beverage. Let's put it this was...when I'm thirsty, I'll go to Sprite. When I want to back up...I'll go to Spb Backup. It's that simple ![]()

Quote:
An incremental backup is when a full backup is taken and then only changed data is backed up until the next full "image copy", increments. In this way both the size and the duration of the backup is minimized at the expense of having to go back to the last full copy, restore that, then apply the incrementals forward to get back to currency. This can, in some cases, also permit a "point-in-time" recovery in-between (or in the middle of) incrementals, thereby allowing for a restoration prior to some inadvertant application data corruption, independent of a full system recovery. It is not uncommon to see the term incremental misused in this way, confused with rotation or retention schemes.

One thing I REALLY like about Spb backup is that restoring from a backup is not device specific. You cannot restore from a Sprite backup on a different device unless you do some serious registry hacking. With Spb Backup its simple and restores without problems.

Is what you are saying then, that I can backup my Axim x51v with spb, and save the file on a pc for example, then if I lose my Axim or it gets replaced I can restore the replacement using the old file, and no doubt need to re -enter registration keys.
If so that is good news, spb here I come.

yes... and you probably won't even need to put the codes back in for most of the software.
sprite will also do this too (edit... as long as it's the same model )
