UPX for PocketPC, now available in beta with PPC .exe support

Hi all.

Thought this might be interesting for some of us:
http://upx.sourceforge.net

It is a runtime packer, which packs the .exe and will extract it in memory when it is started.
The newest beta does support .exe for ARM-PPC.

On PPC's it makes in my eyes sense to pack some .exe.
I actually saved maybe 3 MB of valuable space with compressing some .exe
Some Example-Programs I packed:
ICQ.EXE went from 1251 KB to 469 KB
XNVIEW.EXE went from 890K to 369 KB
REPLIGO.EXE went from 478K to 188 KB

All are running well so far. I made a backup of them to storage card, in case that they dont work when I am on the run.

Regards
Thorsten

So you have to pack the exe files on your PC to use them on your PPC?

Sorry that I did not mention.
The app runs on the PC and you have to basically install an app to the PPC, then copy the .exe to the PC and run the app over it (it is a command line app. so you use it with upx.exe (ppcappname).exe

Then you copy it back to the PPC.
As I stated before, as this is the first beta of it that supports, I would make a backup to the memorycard before doing this, so in the moment of a failure, you can copy the original file back, even when you are on the road.

Hi.

I put some files in the BIS, which is limited anyhow so, it saves me some space.
Additionally it MIGHT support faster start.
I use upx very often for USB-Stick apps. today, processors are pretty fast, but transfer from memory (HDD or especially FLASH-Mems) tend to be the bottleneck.
As the axims dont do a real good job on loading from memory, it might save some starting time, if the app is bigger.

Thorsten

Just want to mention, that upx is now available in version 1.95 (unstable beta).
It now supports .dll compression.
I tested it with various dll's and have no problems so far.
Avantgo seems to run a lot faster as does PocketInformant.
(Both have now packed .exe and .dll)
JavaMidlet seems also to speed up great!

btw. I have nothing to do with the project.

Put some backups on you SD-Card, so you can fallback when you are on the run!

Regards
