Aximsitesoftwareicon FileShredPPC 2.0 is done! Wipe Free Space added!

Thanks to everyone for their input, especially Zaniax.

FileShredPPC 2.0 is sporting a new option, in addition to the file shred options it had before: Wipe Free Space. It now wipes free space on a user-selected volume using the same overwrite options set for file shredding. Again, you can set it from 3 to 10 overwrites.

Please note that wiping free space on a volume takes substantially longer than wiping a file. YMMV. And when it's generating random bytes it tends to slow down a bit.

it does support storage and cf cards with names other than the defaults. the volume loader filters out the common directory names like "\windows" and "\my documents" so you should get your sd/cf card in the list, no matter what name it has.

You can get it at http://pocketpcapps.net/fileshredppc.aspx

Please make sure you uninstall version 1 before installing the new version!

It's free, of course, but donations are always appreciated

comments and suggestions welcome. Enjoy!!

You work fast, greytrev - well done.

Hopefully ver 2.1 will have an one pass option:

Multipass is mandatory on magnetic storage media due to the mechanical r/w head positioning fluctuations (very minor), thereby giving the possiblity for an expert to read residual information on the sides of the r/w tracks.

This is not the case with flash memory as there are no moving parts.

So multipass overwrites are superflucious IMHO -
that is, until I've been told otherwise :-)

just reposted with an option to select from 1 to 10 passes, instead of from 3 to 10 passes

Updated to version 2.1
changed some of the interface components so you can see progress, speeded up the free space wipe utility, and of course it has the option of doing a single wipe, just like Zaniax wanted.

enjoy.

Here his a second reason for using the 'one-wipe' option:

Using a shredder on flash memory may in the long run cause wear out.

I don't think this is very serious problem, just that you are aware ...

Great product!

Two comments (in fact, 4):

-- Can you please make it work with folders? Right now it is possible to add a folder to the list (by selecting no file and pressing "Add File"), but it does not work (worse than that, it causes a "program error" message).

-- When adding files, it would be more convenient if every time the last opened directory would be re-opened.

-- In "about" it still says "3 to 10 times".

-- This tool is very useful and, more important, as far as I know there is nothing else like that existing today (except for a function in Airscan, but that program sucks, imho). It might be the case that you could make some money out of it

Done. Now when you click on Add Dir, you get a directory selection dialog. clicking each directory will show you the selected directory at the bottom. clicking select then loads ALL the files in the directory into the list for shredding.

i MAY get around to this. i'd have to rewrite the custom control, and i fear breaking it. it doesn't seem to be a high priority fix, tho, so i'll leave it be for the time being. sorry.

Thank you. I could certainly make money out of it. that is, provided people make donations. I don't charge outright for my apps, i ass/u/me that if someone likes something i've written and uses it a lot they'll consider making a donation via the links on my site.

FileShredPPC is now version 2.2

Forget it. It was just a comment, totally insignificant, ignore it if the required change is not trivial!

What would REALLY be nice is the equivalent to Norton Utils for the PocketPC built-in file system - specifically, low level WM file system access and file undelete. Working with the SD and CF cards is easy as they use the FAT file system.
I've been looking for low level WM file system info and I can't find it anywhere - and I don't want to join MSDN and pay any fees to get the information. sigh

Cheers

btw, I found this for your FAQ section on Processor types for your website:
