Great little utility - Force Hi Res

Hello All:

I wanted to bring this little utility to the attention of the community. It has been mentioned in LocutusBorgMan's excellent Freeware thread, but, I enjoy this utility so much, I decided it deserved it's own thread!

I own an x51v. I had experimented with the various ways of changing resolution.. the "True VGA" hack.. OzVGA, etc etc.. however, I always found they were a bit more trouble than they were worth. Oftentimes my WA themes would require re-formatting, Some of the menus were messed up, and on and on. However, some things looked WONDERFUL when in VGA mode. Adobe, GS Finder, and many others benefited from the extra resolution. So, I was torn. I'd spend a few days in VGA mode and eventually get too frustrated and just go back. But, that wasn't satisfying because I knew I was missing out on some functionality.

Enter this great little app.

It is a control panel applet that allows you to pick and choose which executable files you want to run in VGA mode. You simply provide the applet with the location of the file and it does the rest. Afterward, every time you launch that app, your screen will toggle over to VGA for that app. It works great on my x51v. I use it for Adobe and GS Finder.

EDIT:

I don't have access to any sort of web host, so, I've posted the file on MegaUpload. Here is the link to the WM5.0 version:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=F0NWIP8F

For WM2003 users, I think this is the file you want, but I have no way of verifying it. If some brave WM2003 user could test this file, I would be appreciative:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=82QH91Z5

Simply copy the .cpl file into /windows. You may have to soft reset. You will then find a new application in settings/system called ForceHiRes. In order for mine to work, I had to check the box for 'hi-resolutionized below'.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the compliments and for sharing your great experience. I'll have to check this one out myself now. The only reason I stayed away is that ForceHiRes did not have a WM5 version until recently.

Wow, this is great. I have never heard of this, and I just tested it on Adobe reader, and it finally looks great.

Thanks,

Is it *supposed* to be a zip file, or is it just named improperly? I can't uncompress it.

PorkRind, yes, it is zip file. Try copyng the link. Then paste it in IE's Adress's bar and click ENTER Save the file.

I have one problem. It requires gsGetFile.dll. Where should I get it from?
SOLVED: http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconVa...sgetfile-i.zip

P.S. Does it add all the programs You require, for instance, Opera 8.60... It writes that this program is HiRes... The same with NetFront.

that worked for me, thanks (i'm using FF though) so it should work for PorkRind too. it's weird how you have to actually copy and paste the link in a new tab to download a working zip file. if you right click and save using FF, you get a corrupt/invalid file.

Sorry for all the weirdness with the link folks. For those FF users who had trouble, I might recommend an extension called linkification. Seems to help me out on a lot of message board links.

Re: the applet adding all files -- I also get the 'This program is already Hi Res' message from time to time. However, I think that is usually the case. Opera actually is VGA aware already.. same for PIE. How well they work in VGA varies, of course. I have yet to have this applet tell me a program was already Hi Res that actually wasn't. Hope that helps.

so lemme get this straight?

With this installed, selected apps will switch to VGA mode while keeping the other OS and other programs in their default QVGA mode on my x51v?

Now with other VGA software, a restart was required for a resolution change... is this still the case?

Perhaps some screenshots would help.

I honestly didn't like VGA mode because the incompatability with some programs, but I can see the usefulness of running several programs in VGA mode such as internet browsers, news feeds, graphics.

You understand it correctly. No soft reset required. Sometimes, the program gets a little flaky and I have to launch the cpl again, but that is a small price to pay for the overall usefulness, IMHO.

Can anyone confirm if this applet is applying this trick, placing a ...0409.mui file in the folder with the program's .EXE to make it VGA aware? If so, this applet would be great as I already do this manually, and an applet would make the process that much easier.
