I just saw this announce: Winrar for desktop will be free (normal cost is $29) this Sunday as explained here:

Winrar is a program like the WinZip specially designed to unpack .rar files that are very popular now.

Never used winrar, but i love their free pocket pc software. I am so cheap too. I will pick up a copy of this free version, and use it till its so obsolete that it stops working.

Here is a few questions I have?

-Since this is legally free, will it be legal to post the free version on the internet/freeware sites? Or doesn't WinRAR want this kind of thing?

I would say no, just because they are giving you a copy for one day only does not mean that they give up their rights to the software. This isn't a special version but their standard commercial version. Microsoft occassionally gives away software but I suspect if you tried to post it as freeware based on this you might find a few lawyers knocking at your door.

I figured. So when we go to download tomorow, is it just going to be the trial version we download, and the key will be emailed to you for free. I think thats how its going to work.

It says this is a "non-upgradeable" version, so I'm thinking they are modifying the code just a bit so it will function as full but you'll need to purchase a key to go any further.

It's rather curious-- if you buy it, you get upgrades for life. Presumably those who voted it #1 are customers who are already getting free upgrades. So who exactly are they thanking?

Free is free and it's certainly not something they had to do. I just hope it works with Vista next year.

I bet they will have to modify it a bit. I was reading the site, and it said upgrade for free, b/c the new version will recognize the key from the old version.
I was wondering what will stop people from doing this to the free version, but im sure winrar is way ahead of that...

Never used winrar before, so I've been doin research on it. Looks like a great program, lots of sites giving away keys for it, but thats illegal (yuck), and this is legal. So, ill be here tommorow to get it.
