Start Menu Cleaner-upper
Why isn't there a program that cleans up the damn start menu?!?!?! I HATE the recently opened icons. It would be ok if there were 4 or MAYBE 5.
I REALLY like how the start menu displays the recent icons when displayed horizontally. It displays just the icons across the top. Like this if I can emulate it in this. O X X X X X X X Program 1 X Program 2 X Program 3 --------------- Settings Looks kinda like that. The "X"s are icons. That is sweet. Does anyone know if there is a reg hack to make the horizontal start menu operate in vertical (normal) mode?

I use SKTools for this clean up. It is probable that MemMaid can do this as well. SKTools has the ability to schedule this to occur automatically and unattended, which I have set it to do every night.

Anyone know about a reg edit that would make the start menu thinks its in horizontal mode all the time? That would be ideal and the perfect solution.

Yeah I liked the older Windows Mobile way of putting just the recently used icons right at the top of the Start Menu horizontally.
I don't know of any registry entry to do this. If you don't want to buy the program to clear out the recently used list, you can delete it manually through the registry (requires a soft reset to take effect). HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shell\TaskSwi tch

Yep, Memmaid can clean up your start menu.

I know of ways to "clean" up the start menu... but I the question is if there is a way to change it. While viewing horizontal mode, the start menu is perfect.
Anyone know a way to make the start menu display the recently opened icons across the top of the start menu instead of listing them? WM5 does it in horizontal mode, so why can't it do it in vertical mode? One would think it'd be a setting or two.

This is an old question and often asked. Many want the icons accross the top as in horizontal mode or the elimination of the recently used icons. There is no answer for the icon issue and the only answer for the elimination of the recently used programs is to edit the registry or use memmaid etc. It is not permanent.

Another option is to use a Task Bar manager like Wisbar Advance 2, which has an option for "Show Recent Items on the Start Menu" which you can uncheck. It also has the advantage of adding cascading Start Menu icons, which is a nice bonus. But, AFAIK, there's no way to enable the 'show recent icons horizontally' feature from Landscape mode in Portrait.
Hmm. Maybe someone should suggest this to Chris at Lakeridge Software. ![]()

Possibly. I know it can be done. I mean there is already support for it in landscape mode. Just gotta find out how to "trick" the OS into thinking its in landscape mode when its not.
Since WA2 can disable recent start menu items, is there a standalone program that can do this? I like WA2 but find that it slows down the system dramatically. Plus I could never really get the entire skin package to work right (iLauncher, botton soft keys, etc).

I believe Wisbar Lite may have access to this feature, although it removes the skinning engine - it keeps the start menu and task management features in place. And I honestly don't see how your x51v would get slowed down by it, when lower-end machines and other x50v's (and many people's x51v's) work great with it.
Maybe it's the skin you were using? But Lite's another option, and one that SHOULD keep that feature in there, IIRC.

Do you mean you want this start bar style, to be the way it is in portrait.

This is not true. I have all my links in folders and they appear if launched from that folder. But ultimately would just like to see a reg hack that makes the landscape start menu available in portrait mode.
