XCPUScalar - Overclocker
XCPU Scalar
Just read about this overclocking utility; can overclock to 530 Mhz with a 236 bus speed. Seems to have good support. Anyone else try this and can give some opinions? -Rotz

Well it sounds like they tested it on the Axim Advance. I wonder how they got it to work? I didn't think that the Axim's buss speed was that fast to begin with.

The new Axims with PXA255 procesors come with default 200MHz bus.
XCPUScalar autodetects your processor type and applies the correct bus speeds. The PXA255 Axims will have a speed slider that goes from 100 to 472MHz at 236MHz bus. The PXA250 Axims will have a speed slider that goes from 100 to 500MHz but since these old Axims could not have their memory overclocked passed 100MHz. All speeds except 472MHz will work on them (100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 at 100 bus).

It looks like a good program, but with a free o/c program like Turbo Tray, I can't imagine many people dropping more than $10 on this.

If you have a PXA250 processor, the free ones will work just as good. With a PXA255 processor, it appears as if this XCPUScalar is working better for most people, because it can overclock the 255 bus speed as well as the clock speed.

Where do I find turbo tray or other free overclocking programs - do these programs have any other side effects other than battery consumption
Thanks Boothy | |||||

of course 10 minutes running it at this speed got my an error in filesys.exe which doesn't really want to be fixed, looks like I might be in for a hard reset.

I went ahead and downloaded the trial version os XCPUScalar
and tried things out. I am running the advanced 400MHz PXA255 chip. When I try to push the Axim to 472MHz, it immediately locks up. Had to soft reset to recover. After so many lockups, I was getting the filesys error as well. This was occasional but started getting worse. Would get this error immediately after a soft reset. Decided to do a hard reset. The first time it froze during the reset process. I have to remove the battery since I could not turn it off. The second time was a success. I was able to restore from a week old backup. I sent an email to ImmierSoft regarding this. According to ImmierSoft, for the Axim to work withing spec, the minimum speed needs to be 10ns. Dell's supplier of Axim memory could ship any rated memory as long as it meets the minimum specification. So apparently, Dell has shipped the Axims in batches with some batches running at 10ns and other batches running faster. According to ImmierSoft, there are several people running XCPUScalar on Axims and don't have a problem I have not verified what memory speed I am running. All I know is that XCPUScalar does not work on the Axim that I have.

If your Axim has the slower 10ns memory then the only speeds that will work on your PDA are 100,200,300,400 and 500MHz. The 472MHz setting clocks your bus and memory and so requires 8ns or better memory for it to work.
Newer Dell Axims all seem to be shipping with at least 8ns or better so have no problem running at 472MHz or any other speed with XCPUScalar.

I purchased XCPUscalar from Handango and it kept locking up my system so I decided to uninstall it from my system. The system said that the uninstall was successful but now ever time I turn my Axim on I get the message.
"Cannot execute XCPUscalar.exe" anyone have any ideas?
