I know what you mean. It saved me the other week, too.

The free backup that comes with the axim works just as good and you can use the $30 for something else.

(I just restored from a dead battery completely in a couple of minutes)

I've heard of random problems with the Dell Backup Utility. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes it works halfway. However, I haven't heard of any problems with Pocket Backup Plus. I prefer to not take chances. Plus, I like how it tells me how long it has been since I backed up. That way I don't have to worry about forgetting. LOL

Sorry, but you are totally wrong. The backup that comes with AS will not backup your cards. It will only backup and restore everything in your main memory. It will not backup and restore selected files OR everything as Pocket Backup Plus is capable of doing. And as can be attested to by others on this thread, Pocket Backup Plus is reliable. The same can not be said for the backup that comes with AS.

The backup that is part of AS is in the same category as the backup, firewall, defragmenters, etc that M$oft supplies with all OS. Very weak and hardly functional.

Ummm . . . I wasn't referring to the AS backup software. . .

I was commenting on my success using Dell's Data Backup program as a free alternative to Pocket BU.

Sounds like you've invested your money wisely and are quite happy with Pocket B/Up.

(I like the convienence of backing up to SD card and being able to restore from a Hard Reset without the need of a host PC). My goal with the PPC device is to make it as completely stand alone as possible. (Typing this much on the AXIM is not easy)

I must be one of the lucky ones who has never had a problem with Dell's backup program [I perform full backups on a weekly basis because I store almost all my biz data on my axim]. I've performed dozens of rolling full backups with no problems whatsoever with the need to recover on (3) occasions that I can remember, again with no problems.

I also see little need in backing up solid state memory (cringe . . . am I jinxing myself); however, I do backup my SD and Built-In Storage to my PC very simply; I copy and paste using AS explorer.

Bottom line . . . whatever makes you happy . . .

Actually, that is the sole reason I got Pocket Backup Plus. I was going to be in Florida for two weeks, and therefore away from my PC. I wanted a backup program that I would not have to be near a PC to run from. Pocket Backup Plus lets you create a self extracting file (like an installation file) so that you do not have to reinstall the program in order to run the restore. It works great.

I'm glad you have been so lucky with the Backup Utility. Nothing is worse than a failed restore. LOL

Just to chime in on one part of the exchange: I, too, got my Axim hoping to make it as near stand-alone as possible. (But I'm starting slow, entranced by AvantGo and MobiPocket synchronized News.) Thanks for the information about Pocket Backup Plus!

What I'm really interested in finding is a setup that allows the Axim to act as USB host.

Dell Axim X5 Advanced (8/8/03), 16 Meg CF Card, Cradle, Belkin Screen Protectors, 2 regular batteries, PCMCIA via CF adapter, PCMCIA modem (32 Kb).

Is this a self extracting backup? Im interested in something that I can just zip and throw on the built in storage, not to zip manually though to much work to unzip and zip over

or i was also wondering if this backup software has a browser i may be able to just save it into a zip folder, correct?

Thanks

Is there a trial version of Pocket Backup Plus so that some of the less experienced can give it a try. Currently I'm looking into Pocket Facelift, and Journal Bar and love both at the present moment.

I believe you can compress the self-extracting files.

You can get a trial version here.

I also love Pocket Facelift.
