External Microphone
Hey, I was wondering, is there any software out there that will let you use the headphone jack on the axim for input as opposed to output. Like I want to plug a microphone in, and record what that microphone hears. I think it should be possible. I have accidentally gotten a microphone to put out, and headphones to work a microphones before. (accidentally, and on a PC.) If anyone knows, please let me know.
Thanks! | |||||||||||

This is not possible. Microphones can produce sound and Headphones can be used as a mic because they are essentially the same thing, just wired in reverse. The headphone jack, however, is wired with an amplifier that takes the internal signal, increases it, and sends it out. This process is not reversible, so whatever goes into the jack will never make it into the unit.

Oh well. It was worth a try. If any of you guys want to explain how the sharp zaurus has one jack for both, it would be greatly apreciated. Bonsia Monkey, I am not trying to prove you wrong or anything, I am just curious how they did it.
Thanks | |||||||||||

they probably have an extra ring in the jack for the microphone or they have a non amplified wired way for the mic signal to come in

The reason a single jack (with very few exceptions) can not be used as a microphone input and a headphone output is pretty simple. It would be putting out a signal (let's say an MP3) to headphones, but that signal would have to travel back into the microphone electronics, which would amplify it and send it out again. This would cause a feedback loop. The only way I know of for something like this to work is to either make it switchable, so you can use one or the other but not both at the same time, or to use a special connector for the mic, so that it doesn't connect to the headphone electronics, except for the ground.
