Why no simple weather?

Is it me or is there no program out there that just does weather. I don't want the hacks, I don't want the other fluff, I just want weather. Basically, I liked Journal Bar but the thing stopped my X5 in its tracks. I also don't need the fluff... JUST WEATHER!

Any help?

LOL, there probably is but i am sure not many people use them because it is better to have the all in one program to take care as much as you can, that way you don't use as much ram and cpu power trying to run 5 programs to do the job of one.

That being said, i use a program called TodayPlus for my weather, wonderful today skin, RSS feeds, shortcuts, tasks, battery and memory stats, etc. Very nice to have it all in one thats for sure.

Look at my icon, that is the todayplus program in action

I'm currently playing with writting a today plugin which displays the current weather plus 5-day forecast.,

I too wanted something simple. I did not want all the extras that the others provide. Just weather.

It basically works. It obtains its weather feed from the MSNBC website (http://www.msnbc.com/m/chnk/d/weathe...?acid=UKXX0260 - where the last bit is the city's code)

When it is a bit tider, can send you the cab files (and source if you so wish...)

Is it possible to get weather feeds anywhere besides msnbc? They seem to be pretty lax about updates.

During the day, MSNBC updates about once an hour, at least for the location I am interested in.

Their 4-5 day forecast is not bad. Where I live on the South Coast of the UK, the weather is notoriously changeable (micro-climate) - even the BBC struggles to get it correct.

If anyone knows of any other feeds, please say!! I'm only using MSNBC because that is the only one I know of (without having to do screen/data scraping...)

Hey,

This solution may appear to be "fluff" but you could actually set up Avantgo to sync your device to Accuweather.com You could remove all other channels to keep from the distractions if you don' t want them. I like this weather service because it is almost exactly like the "Weather Channel" for accuracy. Plus the service is FREE and your device should be an easy setup since Avantgo is already loaded. When setting up the Accuweather channel you Just input your zip code.

I set up one of my hardware buttons to take me directly to Avantgo. So I just press the button, tap the Accuweather channel, and choose from "My local Forecast", "Radar", "Satellite", "Travel Forecasts", etc. Maybe I'm missing something but my trial with Journal Bar weather was less than satisfying. Seeing the satellite picture with Accuweather sold me. The radar picture updates at least once an hour or more and is more frequently updated than the satellite picture (every couple of hours or so) but that is OK for me. I don't need up to the minute forecasts (although I understand that coolness factor for those who want it). The forecasts are good for my area and my friends are impressed with my weather pictures.

Sport

P.S. I used ThemeMaker Lite to set My background wallpaper picture of a hurricane as seen from outer space... really cool looking photo I found on the web . Sorry I don't have a screen capture program to show you.
HARDWARE: Axim X5 Advanced with cradle, extended life battery, Dell Foldable Keyboard, and a 128 MB Sandisk CF card

Wisbar Advanced, Total Commander, Pocket Backup, Pocket Informant 5, TextMaker, Olive Tree Bible Software, GameBox Gems, (and I use AvantGo regularly).

Accuweather.com appears to be for the US only.

I have been using MobileMate with good success. It shows up on my Today screen and I can program 5 cities. Has a few extras. Their is a free trial.
There are two secrets to my success:

1. Never tell everything you know.
2.

I agree with you 100%. Got pkWeather. Fancy Flash with data feed from weather.com. But it is not a Today plug in.

I would pay for a simple weather Today plug in. As long as it doesn't take up to much space. If there is a feature to customize how much information to display, that would be wonderful.

Just read about ADB Weather from another forum. $5.

I also forgot WeatherToday. This is more expensive at $12.95. It certainly looks much better than when it first came out.

The today weather I'm working on is small and simple and does not cause the PDA to hang while it is updating itself - the update is handled by a separate execution thread.

One issue I had with the other today weather tools is that I wanted to see the temperature in Celsius, not Fahrenheit. So this one is configurable.

It also maintains a small log of points which can be trended to see what the pressure, wind speed and temperature have been doing over the last few days.

I do not have an installer yet. Once I have generated an installer and resolved installation issues, will post it up somewhere.

I'm off to Spring Harvest next week, so it will be not available until the week after next (back 19th April) at the earliest.

To show that it is not vapour-wear, see attached screen-shot.

Some good input from everyone... thanks. I guess I could summarize my "ideal" weather application...(no particular order)

1) Today screen plugin or perhaps a taskbar icon option so it could be brought up from anywhere.
2) inexpensive - $5 US or less, free would be great!
3) 4-7 day forecast summary with cute little icons and perhaps temp summaries (high-low)
4) click on day detailed forecast
5) radar important, sat not as important but nice.
6) graphical maps would be nice too, but not necessary
7) and it CANNOT slow down my X5.

That should cover it... did I miss anything?

Cool! Looks pretty interesting. I can't wait to see how this develops. (No pun intended.) Please keep us posted. (Again, no pun intended.)

Here's a "deal" from Vintage Slots on an interesting weather program.

Check out "Stocks and Weather Today". You can turn the stocks option off. You can also customize it to show forecast, no forecast, etc. It also provides hazardous weather alerts (US only). Displays weather for up to 6 cities (including international cities). Displays local time of day. Allows you to get detailed forcast information with a simple tap. Allows you to go directly to NOAA for more information. Allows you to control how long each city is displayed. Allows you to control how often to go to the weather server. Has animated and fixed weather icons. Display the local time in 12/24 hour format. Display the temperature in F or C. Turn off the display of local time.

Let's see, did I forget anything. Oh yeah, the price.

$19.95 but if you buy it before noon this Friday you can get it for $5.99 The link to handango (which is the only place you can get it for that price) is http://www.handango.com/PlatformProd...roductId=43149

Why so cheap you ask??? To make a long story short, there is a bet at the office that decreasing the price and advertising it on some forums will sell x additional units.

If you want it you better get it now as I don't think the boss will let us do this again
Dave
