Question Dreaming about more Memory

I was wondering if there is a program out there that would let you take some of your SD or CF Card memory and merge it into your program memory?

What I would like to do is this. Let say on my Axims X5 that has 32 megs. I have only 7 megs to run my programs and 2 megs memory Storage that is free.

I was wondering if there is some short of program that would let you merge some of your SD Card memory over to Main Memory.

So say I have a 125 meg SD Card. The program would let me go in and software move as much memory from that card to be use as Program and Storage Memory On the AXIM X5.

IS there such a thing?

No, but the solution to your problem is to move your programs from Main Memory to you SD Card and so free up Main Memory space for you programs to run in. You can do this wilh a file explorer using cut and paste, but the recommended method is to remove and re-install.

If you don't know how to do this, read Gigi's excellent tutorial "Instaling, Running and Removing Software" from Aximsite>Resources>Tutorials (or now from the Front Page I think).

Thanks for the Responds Davrol

I have installed everything on my SD Card. But even doing that there are some dll and other items that still goes into your /windows/ to run.

I wonder if there is a way to make a path command like in windows where one could moved items out of windows over to the SD card directory. That would free up a lot of memory.

Something like Path=sd Card/windows

That way PC 2003 would know to look their as well.

I'm not sure that I fully understand you. There is no folder Windows\To run.

The only programs stored in Main Memory are those listed in the My Device\Program Files folder. Some programs have to be installed in Main Memory, like Today Screen Plug Ins and others, which make use of the Buttons like Pocket Informant or Agenda Fusion, prefer to be in Main Memory to work properly but do not absolutely have to be.

PPC 2002 and WM2003 are not really at all like Desktop Windows. There is no "Path" statement.

Actually n5emj is correct -- certain programs will install files to your \windows folder even if you correctly redirect them to either the SD card or Built-In storage.

If you install a lot of programs that put files there they can start to add up.

I've gotta run to work so I don't have time to explain in detail, but I can say that I've not found a good way around this yet.

Yes, even when you isntall to SD card, there are many apps that throw files in Main Memory, specifically the \windows folder. I can see how after time, main mem would fill up with the accumulation of files that are thrown into main memory. What I've noticed is that when you install to SD, some apps put the program executable on the SD card, and dll and other files in main memory.
Best Regards,

Wooch

Like Pocket AIM, HP Mobile Printing, etc. I wish they'd help/fix that. It's a bit annoying when you're trying out software. You have to hard reset every other week!

Why do you have to do a hard reset every week, just curious? The HP app wrecked my Axim, blew away the built-in storage!!

Kellis and Wooch - many thanks for your explanation. I now realise what n5ejm is getting at - I am afraid I was being rather dim. I have an X5 Advanced with 64Mb RAM so I have not hit this problem, although my Windows folder is pretty big, 9.83 Mb. My Main Memory allocation is 17.2 Mb storage with 46.8 Mb left for programs to run in. I have 119 programs, games or utilities currently installed, mainly on my SD Card with my CF Card used for e-books and music (*.wma files) and my BIS uased for a compressed backup.

None of this is much help to n5ejm I am afraid, Can anyine else help ?

I was thinking that there might be away of putting some sort of informations in the registory for doing this.

If so it would be over my head on what to put in or where to put it in at. But there should be away to do it.

The registory knows to look in device/windows as it is.

There should be away to get the registory to look in the
SD Card/window too. Of course that Dir would need to be
made.

Then one could copy of the extra stuff over the the SD Card and the programs will still run because windows knows where to find it.
