Question SD Maintenance

Pocket Mechanic is a suite of features one can use with an SD card to keep it running well. I have used it, and feel it's ok. Is there another one that serves equally well or better?

Storage Tools is also pretty good. You can find it on Handango.

OK, I'll bite. What kind of maintenance has to be performed on a storage card to keep it running properly? I have never had any problems with cards.

I really don't maintain my SD card, but I did try something that I've found real helpful.

I noticed that there was alot of space that was taken up on my SD card by who knows what, basically, wasted empty space.

I came across these settings on a forum (don't think it was even PPC related and gave it a shot. The only thing I changed was I chose not to backup the FAT. It made a difference in my cards performance, minimized slack space to less that 1%, and freed up alot of that "empty wasted space".

I used the Pocket Mechanic Logical Format Module to format my SD card. Make sure you transfer all your SD card data to your PC before formatting, as you will lose all data on the card.

Here are the settings I went with:

Uncheck all the boxes except quick format

FAT:16
Cluster Size: 4K

Then tap Format

It literally takes 2 seconds to format. Then I transferred my data back to my SD card and I was back in business!! I've attached a screenshot the settings that I've listed above.

I don't really defrag, once in a while I just copy the data from my SD card to my PC, delete everything off of the card, then transfer it back. Doing this with a PC Card reader significantly decreases the time it takes to do this.

What I would like to have is a program that could clean up the SD card of programs and data that are duplicated in Ram and Rom. After many installs and uninstalls to minimize the use of Program Ram, I think my SD cards are sloppy.

Let me add, this is particulary important after several Hard Restarts and you can't keep track of what you installed where. Obviously the SD card, and ROM, are not removed during a hard reboot.

You can get it here. It is not freeware, but it is an excellent util. It should be fully functional for a certain amount of time, after which you are required to pay.

PM is one of the first apps listed on my handango purchase history page I've really gotten alot of great use out of it. Anton is very responsive in his forums as well.
