System Optimizer???

Sorry, this isn't related directly to the Axim but I'm looking for a good system optimizer since my home pc *dell dimension 4600* has too many programs running in the background 65 or so, I know i don't need them all and it would probably help my activesync to get rid of some of those extra programs. Thanks in advance!!!!

Take a look at this URL, Registry Medic is the program I run about once a week to keep the Desktop PC cleaned up and running smooth. Not certain this is really what you want, but it really works well.

ounds like a job for Startup Inspector for Windows!

www.windowsstartup.com

One of my favorite free Windows utils

Install & run it, & uncheck any items you don't want starting w/ windows. Click Apply & restart your PC!

This util is a blessing for PC users

To keep my start-up group nice and clean I use two pieces of donationware from Mike Lin.

StartUpControlPanel (similar to the software Wooch highlighted) in that it lets you choose which programmes run at start time - LINK

Also I use StartUpMonitor.

This is a great tiny piece of software which you use when you have already got your system set-up as you like. It runs in the background (as I say it is tiny) and it will pop-up when a piece of software tries to add itself to the start-up group and allow you to make a decision as to allow or disallow it to.

I always find it amazing what software does try and add programmes to the start-up group + how many entries they try to make (RealNetworks for example ) eg) my Samsung printer software tried to add 14! different commands to the start-up sequence BUT it works fine without ANY of them.

A link to the StartupMonitor (which I highly recommend as it reduces the future need to clean your start-up again) is HERE

There are also about 20-25 other useful applications on his site that you may find useful - they are all donationware

Also I use JV16 Powertools to clean up the registry after unistalling programmes.

Good point Rob. I launch SIW after installing an app to see if it put an entry in 1 of my startup areas. You will be amazed @ the junk that gets put there. I only have 2 items that start w/ Windows, and my PC & ActiveSync run great!
Best Regards,

Roxio Drag to Disc and MS Intellipoint. Theoretically, I could get away without either of these starting up, but I want Intellipoint because I have the TrackBall Optical. I think I'm gonna remove D2D because I haven't used it in some time. So, I'm down to one!!!

BTW, I don't have AS installed on this machine, otherwise it would be in the startup list!
Best Regards,

Guys, could you elaborate on how these utilities are better than just going to Start-> Run-> "msconfig" and then unchecking unwanted start up processes?

Gigi - Because in SIW, you see all items that are starting up in a pleasant, easy to use interface as opposed to the multiple tabs you need with MSCONFIG. It's a very simple program, and I highly recommend it to anyone. I would install Startup Inspector for Windows, then compare it to MS config. You'll see the differences pretty quickly.

Rob - After looking @ SUCP, the feature that I like better about SIW is that it doesn't have any tabs, you see all items that are starting up in one screen, but you can sort them by the location from which they are starting from. Additionally, you can use the "Consult" feature to obtain information about the items that are starting up, great for items that you are not sure about.

Yes - I went to your link earlier and it looked good - so I downloaded it and will try it tomorrow (it's 1.30am here - so I am off to bed soon ).

Will let you know my thoughts. (BTW Wooch - sent you a PM).
