Your Opinion Requested

I am new to forums so please forgive me if I don't know what I'm doing. I'm looking into some software to add to my axim.

Battery Pack Pro, SPB Pocket Plus, or WisBar Advance 2?

MemMaid, Pocket Mechanic, or...?

Any freeware or are these versions best?
Pros and cons and any other comments please.

Thanks for your time and Merry Christmas!

Well, I'm a big Battery Pack Pro fan, and I also use Wisbar Advanced 1.3. I wasn't wild about 2.0, so I stuck with the free version of Wisbar. I've used BP for almost a year, and didn't really care for SPB Pocket plus, but there are many fans of the SPB app . . .
Best Regards,

Wooch

I love Wisbar Advance 2, and I actually use both MemMaid and Pocket Mechanic. However, once MemMaid includes Storage Card utilities (not sure if that is still planned), I will probably uninstall Pocket Mechanic.
I used to really use Battery Pack Pro, but once I got my new Axim I didn't install it. I mainly used it for the Program Bar, but since WA2 has cascading menus, I don't even use that.
You may want to look at Sprite Backup Premium for a backup program.

I like SPB PocketPlus for everything except PIE enhancements. The close button, file explorer and Today Page management enhancements are worth the price. Sure you could duplicate all these enhancements with freeware but I like the idea of just dealing with one app.

There are more important apps than any you mention.

Firstly, you need a good file explorer. The built in explorer is not very nice and I find it difficult to use. I much prefer explorers that map all memory - like Explorer on your desk top. Resco Explorer 2003 is generally reckoned to be the best, but it has become rather expensive. Very nearly as good but much cheaper is Advanced Explorer which costs about $2.00.

Secondly, you need a good backup utility. Again the built in backup is not very good. Much better is Sprite Backup. Among its many advantages is that it compresses backup files to about 50%, it produces self extatacting backup .EXE files which do not need the program to be running to restore and it can be scheduled to do automatic backups either daily (strongly recommended) or weekly. This can be a real life saver. If you buy the Premium Edition you can also backup to your PC and you get two very nice extra programs :

PocketMon - a today screen plug in which monitors the battery charge, main memory, SD card and CF card memory state, and the processor activity (interesting but not all that useful) and :

Space Detective - a useful memory analyser.

If you get these two you probably will not need BatteryPack Pro or SPB Pocket Plus as well, as they do much the same things.

I use both MemMaid and Pocket Mechanic, they do different things. I also use SK Tools which does not have the easy interface of MemMaid but is a lot more powerful.

BTW Welcome to Aximsite You will find both your Axim and the site totally addictive and the site is a mine of useful information and someone will always be able to answer any queriesyou may have. But to avoid asking questions that have been asked many times before, I strongly suggest the you read the Tutorials - especially those by Gigi - and the FAQs. You will find them listed under Resources at the top of all pages.

Thanks for the input so far! How about:

WisBar Advance vs. Wisbar Advance 2?

Advanced Explorer vs. Total Comander?

Pocket RAR vs. other freeware?

Weather to go?

Again thanks for the input and Merry Christmas!

For a file explorer, I would actually suggest Resco Explorer (which also includes a zip utility). For weather, you may want to look at Weather Panel. Journal Bar is nice, but it has a lot more than just weather (and believe me, you pay for the extra). As for WA vs. WA2, I'm not really sure. I never actually used WA, but I love WA2.

You do not say what version your Axim is, nor what OS you are running.

Wisbar Advance is freeware. Wisbar Advance 2 costs about $8.00 I believe, But neither run properly/or at all on WM 2003 SE and/or are not VGA compatible.

Advanced Explorer is virtually as good as Resco (I find it hard to tell the difference). It also has a Recycle Bin (the only explorer that has). It costs about $2.00. Total Commander is free but does not map memory.

You know, I see a lot of people saying this, so I guess I am just lucky. I love WA2 and haven't had any problems with it.

After using WA 1.x Advanced, I installed 2.0 and had some problems with it on my X3i, so I reverted back to 1.x. I love WisBar, and I highly recommend
