Amount of Software
Does it really matter how many software apps. are put on a CF card or do too many, add too many program files to the RAM? What is a good level to keep your memory storage/programs at?

. You can put as many Apps on your SD/CF Cards as they will hold. It's best to do this as much as possible to keep your Main Memory free. You can also store some apps into BIS, but be wary of any that write to their own Folders continuously, as ROM does have Write Limits......they are in the 100's of thousands, but an app that writes to a DB Folder a couple of times a second, continuously, could eat those 100K cycles up pretty fast. Some apps won't/don't/shouldn't be put anywhere but Main Memory, generally these are Today Screen Plug-Ins that are constantly being accessed for information to keep your Today Screen Refreshed. Also...you can set the Memory Slider to wherever you want, but Unka Bill Knows Best and will Reset it to where HE sees fit automatically and almost instantaneously. . . . .

Yeah, the memory slider thing is a waste.
Anyway, it's good to put your big programs into the Storage Card and your smaller programs onto Main Memory. The more separate programs you put on the storage card, the longer your Axim will take to boot after a soft reset. So, if you put 5-10 programs onto the storage card, you'll probably be fine. However, if you put more than that, the Axim will take considerably longer to reboot. If you use MemMaid to clean up unneccessary files, the Main Memory should be just fine and be able to hold many programs.
