Wisbar/MagicButton, etc.
Is it just me or is wisbar slow? It seems to lag the whole systems. I have been using magicbutton as a replacement. However, I am picky and can't stand the magicbuttin icon it puts up there when on today screen. Anyone know any other options or know how to speed up wisbar? There seems to be significant lag in start menu, etc.
Thanks | |||||

I'll ask the obvious question - did you install it to Main Memory or Built in Storage or a Storage Card? These Today Utilities need to be installed to Main memory. Regards Martin

Yes it's normal.
Wisbar is mainly a menu bar replacement. It organizes all your shortcuts into folder, etc. So the first thing it does when you click on the Start menu (after a soft reset) is loading all the shortcuts icons. And depending how many you have in your start menu, and where they are located, that can take some times (3-5 seconds can be normal). BUT it only does that the first time it loads the menu. SHould be a lot quicker after that initial load.

Be sure you're using the latest Wisbar Adveance 2 beta version as well. The link is in the Lakeridge Software forums. I think it's Version 2.0.0.24

I never really paid that much attention other than to notice that it sometimes ran slow. But now that I'm noticing it more, I realize it's when I first load it after the Axim has been off for a while.
There is an option in the Start Menu Settings - "Cache program icons on startup" - what does this do?

It definitely runs quicker in Main memory. The good news is that you can run Pocket Breeze very well from a Storage Card, as it sticks the Today Screen dll in Main Memory, even if you pick, say the SD card for installation. As a general rule, based on my experience and advice from others, here are a few ideas on memory. Main Memory Try to install only Today plugins here. I have Wisbar, Pocket spb Plus and Weather Panel installed here, and not a lot more. There are a very few programmes which must be installed in Main Memory, but not many. Built in Memory This is very slow. Much slower even than CF or SD cards. Use it to store files such as Word Documents, Spreadsheets etc. It doesn't get wiped in a hard reset, so if the worst happens, you will not lose your files. (Of course, you take nightly back ups anyway don't you...) I must say that I have successfully run games from Built in Storage, so it probably pays to experiment - just keep your Today stuff out of there. SD Card I use this for virtually every programme. Also, anything you can store in the "My Documents" folder in main memory can go in a folder of the same name in any Storage Card (Built in, SD or CF). Look for a file called "ignore_my_docs" on your storage card. You can safely delete it, and will allow the system to see everything in your "My Documents" folder just as if it were in main memory. A good example of things you might want to stick in the "My Documents" Folder on a storage card are Today themes (*.tsk), Books or indeed mp3s. Applications will find them automatically. CF Card Some people say these are faster than SD. I can't see a difference in real life. I tend not to put a lot of programmes on the CF card, as it can be used for add on devices (in my case a gprs modem), so when you switch it out you lose all your programmes. I use CF storage for storing movies, and maps for my Tomtom Navigation System. I stress the above is only my view, and I'm fairly certain there will be an uber X50v user along in a minute to correct me! Regards Martin
