LOL, is there much maintenance involved with Linux? IE, are there many compatible programs to make this program effective in a windows dominated enviroment?

well from a productivity point of view, i can get by with gimp, open office and firefox.

I understand it is more stable, and less prone to viruses due to lack of users, however I don't know if I could justify the time needed to adapt the program to my specific computer lifesyle.

Last time my Windows wouldn't start up, I wiped my drive clean and installed SuSE into one partition and Windows back into another. When my Windows again died yesterday morning, I was able to boot into SuSE and back up my files onto a USB 2.0 external hard drive.
