Remember when the principal had a wooden paddle with holes drilled in it? My jr high school principal had a saw off wooden boat oar with holes. He routine took kids for a "ride down the river" as we used to call it. He we make you bend over and place your hands on his desk and start swinging. The first lick hurt, the second numbed you rear, and the third you didn't even feel. He hit so hard it would literally lift you off the floor, not that I would personally know

My PE teach had a leather strap, 1inch wide, about six layers of leather 1 inch thick, accross the finger tips, sane scenario. Hope you don't miss it. LOL
