Should know, the area of Florida that I am in has erupted into a state of jubilation bordering on, if not surpassing, hysteria.
The owner of the bar I was in insisted that he drive me back to my Hotel, and this is a man who had never met me before tonight.
There are few things that scare me, but tonight I have experience a "Mob" in the "Home of the Brave".
I have seen worse in my time in Bolivia, Uruguay, Israel, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Congo Etc...but to feel that same malevolences here is ................. to be honest, I can't express how I feel about it.
Should know, I'm worried about the election of a man at what appears to be nothing more than face value.
Edit: I'm not commenting on the man that was elected, but the attitude of the country.
As an outsider you sometimes see things differently, and I just wanted to post the raw feelings of the evening.
S/K - I, and many others, have the same concerns. Especially when the Democrats have gained more power in Congress and they're the ones who put us in this poor economic situation. Not the President.

s/k I would invite you outside the bar, into a household where volunteers gathered (choose a side, either one) to watch returns together. I would invite you to churches, community centers, polling places--any number of places across that state and the country. Perhaps some public celebrations, including the ones I saw on tv, look like rock concerts, but those are simply public rituals of display that allow people to express deeper wishes and concerns. Americans are anxious right now because of our economic mistakes, our wars, our relationship with the world, and public parties are simply one response. We're also amazed with the historic nature of this election. Step away from the bar and its street, and I'll show you some other Americans.
edit: consider also the substantive speeches both candidates gave last night. I thought both were sober and significant.
S/K - It's not speeches that resolve issues. It's actions. The first 100 days will be the most telling. IOW - Actions speak louder than words. As with every new President we've had, I'm in the "wait and see mode".

S/K - Calm down Fangy. People can redicule our country all they want, but, when push comes to shove, we're the ones who make it happen. If someone doesn't believe it, why did all the stock markets in the world tank when ours did. Basically, the world relies on our economy.

Should know H, I understand your point, and I have met many "other Americans". I have travelled extensively throughout the states, I've only missed a couple, and have been welcomed everywhere I went by warm hearted, kind and generous people.
My post was about the reaction in the community where I was, and I was trying to express what it felt like and what I could compare it to.
I should have left out any political comments.
I'm sure in other parts of the country the public celebration has been just that, Celebration, but here it was more of a call to arms. Unfortunately last night, in this area, the colour of your skin was the only criteria used to determine which side you belonged to, and it would have taken just one incident to spark it off into something nasty.
I've been there and seen it happen before.
Should know it's a beautiful day here in Miami and I must go and enjoy as much of it as I can before jumping on a plane tonight to head back into winter.
